Cahill Wins Home Town Cup With Rialya – Adelaide Cup 2012 Results

Hard working hoop Shayne Cahill was rewarded with his massive weight loss effort to get down light enough for Monday’s 2012 Adelaide Cup ride on Rialya after the local Lloyd Kennewell-trained horse took out the two-mile classic in a thrilling photo finish.

Drunken Sailor

Beaten 2012 Adelaide Cup favourite Drunken Sailor did well to hold on for second

Cahill half-joked after the race on being on a nothing but air diet over the past week in order to get to the 54kg weight required to ride smart Kempinsky four-year-old Rialya in the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville today.

Not only did he make the weight, in the end his excellent ride won the race as Rialya ($12) fought on to win by the bob of the head over determined race favourite Drunken Sailor ($5).

Walter McShane’s Tassie raider Norsqui, winner of the Mornignton Cup last time out, finished off the winning Adelaide Cup Trifecta two lengths off the top two.

Last-start Lord Reims Stakes winner Enchanting Waters ($17) rounded out the first four another length away while Peter Moody’s equal $5 favourite Hanks was nearly five lengths off the winner in fifth.

Taking nothing away from the winner Michael Moroney’s beaten favourite Drunken Sailor was an excellent second having drawn the far outside barrier 20 of 20 and carried the 59.5kg topweight, giving away 5.5kg to eventual champ Rialya.

Soon after the big field jumped in front of the huge Morphettville crowd $201 roughie Warringah went to the lead and they stayed there until the final 800-metres.

Proving themselves a genuine staying type, Rialya settled in fourth and remained in the top half of the field throughout as they saw the 3200-metres for the first time.

By the 1000-metres the field had expectedly bunched up with Drunken Sailor and jockey Damien Oliver making their big run with 800m left to travel.

Moving into fourth Drunken Sailor quickly challenged Warringah, who eventually faded to finish 16th, was turning it into a dour staying test.

Norsquie was also coming home strongly at this stage.

At the 200-metres Drunken Sailor hit the lead and the favourite backers were cheering like crazy.

Soon Enchanting Waters joined in and there was a big four-horse battle.

Up front it was Drunken Sailor running out of his skin and Rialya who were really fighting it out, the photo finish revealing Rialya coming back on the inside to grab the favourite in the run to the line.

It was a huge Adelaide Cup result for young local trainer Lloyd Kennewell who was quick to credit Cahill for getting the weight and the win.

“Shane gave him a beautiful ride,” Kennewell said.

“Just a terrific ride.

“This horse is tough, he’s strong and we just can’t believe he’s acutally done it

“It’s surreal

“I’m 28 and this is by first big race win.”

It was also the pinnacle of an up and down riding career for Cahill who after many years in the saddle finally won his hometown cup and there was no better feeling than that.

“He got off the fence at the right time,” Cahill said.

“Just worked the run in the right time.

“It was a bit of a stop and start race.

“He’s finished off at the right time.

“It’s great.”

The Adelaide Cup was Rialya’s seventh win from 24 starts and took their prize money earned to $447,913.

It was also their second stakes victory following a win in the Listed Birthday Cup (2028m) at the track two starts back before their second to Enchanting Waters in the Lord Reims.

There is every chance the better performing horses from today’s Adelaide Cup will continue onto the autumn’s other big two-mile showdown, the 2012 Sydney Cup.

The $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) is set to run at Royal Randwick on April 28 and nominations for the event will be taken tomorrow.
