Spirit Song Claims Schweppervescence Trophy 2012

The 2012 Schweppervescence Trophy has been won by Spirit Song at Flemington Racecourse today.

Spirit Song won the Schweppervescence Trophy by a nose ahead of second place-getter Marveen and third place-getter Seduced.

Trainer Aaron Purcell highlighted just how brave a performance today had been for Spirit Song.

“She’s a horse that’s come to me with a lot of problems,” Purcell said.

“She’s a gutsy mare and thanks to all the people that work with her.

“She’s got fetlock issues (and is a) very headstrong horse.

“She takes a lot of looking after but she’s definitely worthwhile.”

Purcell had been concerned with the 2012 Schweppervescence Trophy’s 1,600 metre distance.

“The mile was a bit of a concern but she over raced a little bit last start (over 2000 metres),” he said.

Spirit Song will now look to go back to back in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes on March 23, 2012.

“She’ll probably run the Sunline (Stakes) at Moonee Valley in two weeks,” her trainer said.

Ben Melham was the jockey who steered Spirit Song to her 2012 Schweppervescence Trophy win.

“She really had to fight for it,” Melham said.

“I think it was more my horse digging in for the fight, rather than Marveen stopping.

“(It’s been a) good training performance to keep her up for as long as he has.”

Spirit Song was paying odds of $5 to win the 2012 Schweppervescence Trophy at bookmaker.com.au.

The mare has now won six of her 18 race starts and earned close to $280,00 in prize money.
