Manighar Wins 2012 Australian Cup – Flemington Race 7 Results

Manighar has won the 2012 Australian Cup at Flemington in a thrilling photo finish today March 10, 2012.

The six-year-old gelding just out-bobbed Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed on the line in what was just one of many nail biting finishes on track today.

Race favourite Americain finished in third, while Precedence ran home to nab fourth position.

Manighar has now won eight of his 25 race starts and has earned more than $1.85 million in prize money.

It was just the third start for Peter Moody, who took over from Luca Cumani as Manighar’s trainer after last year’s spring carnival.

Today’s victory marked the first time Moody had claimed the elusive $1 million Australian Cup.

“Tremendous thrill,” Moody said of the win.

“I’ve never been successful in one of these.

“He’s a terrific old horse.”

Moody said Manighar has thrived since making Australia his permanent home.

“He came to us in great condition,” Moody said.

“He’s really enjoyed what’s happening here in Australia.”

The trainer expects Manighar to be even more competitive in the Group 1 The BMW on April 7, 2012.

“We’re still working him out,” Moody said.

“I think The BMW is the race we’ve really targeted.”

Co-owner Terry Henderson was over the moon to have claimed an Australian Cup with Manighar.

“It’s just an incredible thrill,” Henderson said.

Jockey Luke Nolen was aboard Manighar for his Australian Cup 2012 win.
