Hay List Takes Out 2012 Newmarket Handicap

Race favourite Hay List has finally had his day in the sun, taking out the prestigious $1 million 2012 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington today.

The long time bridesmaid to wonder mare Black Caviar, Hay List produced a stellar run to beat Buffering in a photo finish over the 1200 metre Group 1 sprint.

It was a sensational effort from the John McNair trained gelding who carried the heaviest weight (58.5kg) in to the Newmarket out of any horse since 1959.

Hay List is owned by the Davenport family and Katie Davenport was over the moon with the star six-year-old’s performance considering the weight he was carrying.

“It means everything, he’s just such an incredible competitor,” she said.

“We were very nervous today, being the top weight.

“He’s so amazing, every time we ask him to step, he steps up and does better than we can imagine…what a champion.”

Hay List showed he was the deserving bookmaker.com.au $3.70 favourite and now has 15 victories from 22 starts.

Jockey Glyn Schofield rode the classy gelding beautifully, holding him back until the last furlong before taking the lead.

“John [McNair] had him so well today, he [Hay List] wanted to race a little bit too much too early,” he said.

“I just tried to fight him, not too much but enough just to get him in behind Foxwedge and get a trail off that horse.

“I said to John earlier on, I don’t really want to make him carry his weight all the way.”

Schofield was full of praise for Hay List, who is now without doubt a champion in his own right.

“This fella [Hay List] deserves his day in the sun, he’s his own history maker today.”

Up and coming colt Foxwedge also ran well in the huge 22-horse field, eventually finishing third. It signals a bright future for the John O’Shea trained three-year-old.
