2012 Black Opal Stakes Day – Preview

Tullamore is the favourite in betting for the 2012 Canberra Cup

The massive weekend of racing will continue tomorrow with a bumper 2012 Black Opal Stakes Day to take place in Canberra.

The prime event is the Black Opal Stakes but there are three other listed races on the eight-race card including the Canberra Cup, National Sprint and Canberra Guineas.

With plenty of prize money and some good preparation ahead of the major Sydney Autumn races up for grabs, plenty of talent will grace the nation’s capital this Sunday.

Races.com.au is here to bring you a preview of the four Listed races to be held on Black Opal Stakes Day 2012.

Race 5 – 3:31pm Canberra Guineas (1400m)

The Canberra Guineas is the first of the Listed races to take place this Sunday and will be held over 1400 metres. The Peter Snowden trained Detours is the early $4.00 favourite at bookmaker.com.au and is coming off a win in the Edmen Community Staffing for three-year-olds at Rosehill last weekend. Deceiver is next back in the betting at $4.60 and is chasing a fourth consecutive victory. It will be interesting to see whether the gelding can handle a step up in class on Sunday.

Race 6 – 4:10pm Kamberra Wine Company Black Opal Stakes (1200m)

Run over 1400 metres, the 2012 Black Opal Stakes is Canberra’s premier race and is worth $250,000. A talented field is set to line up in the two-year-olds’ race and the bookmakers and punters are having trouble splitting the favourites. Epaulette is currently favourite at $3.80 (bookmaker.com.au) with Later Gator at $4.40, both are coming off victories last start. Cavalary Rose has come into $4.20 and the John O’Shea trained Faustus is at $4.40.

Race 7 – 4:45pm Mecerdes Benz (Canberra) Canberra Cup (2000m)

The Canberra Cup serves as the second most important race on Black Opal Stakes day and is a stayers’ event run over 2000 metres. The early markets suggest the talented Gai Waterhouse trained Tullamore is the likely front runner ($2.50 at bookmaker.com.au). Last week’s Parramatta Cup winner Praecido ($6.00) is next best in the betting and will be looking to add to his two career wins. Two time Group One winner Zavite provides some value for the punters at $31.00.

Race 8 – 5:20pm Magnet Mart National Sprint (1400m)

The $100,000 National Sprint rounds out the huge day of racing in Canberra and the 1400 metre event features some talented horses. Included is Alma’s Fury who is chasing a fourth consecutive victory and will start as $4.60 favourite in the betting at bookmaker.com.au. Hood ($7.50) may be one horse that can challenge the favourite and is coming off  third-place effort last start at Warwick Farm. Onthelookout at $7.00 should not be ignored, with the gelding coming off a victory in the Fernwood Liverpool for three-year-olds on February 18.
