Betting Update and Predicitons – Kewney Stakes 2012

There has been some movement in the betting ahead of the Group 2 2012 Kewney Stakes, which is the fifth race on the massive nine-card day of racing at Flemington this Saturday.

The $300,000 race is run over 1400 metres and Shopaholic has moved in to outright favourite ($3.50) at bookmaker.com.au.

Shopaholic has moved in to outright favourite for the Kewney Stakes

Yesterday, there was no way of splitting Shopaholic and Soft Sand ($3.80), with both opening at $3.70.

Shopaholic is also the Races.com.au favourite to take top honours in the $300,000 race, with the New Zealand filly coming off three consecutive victories.

She followed up a win in the Group 3 Vanity with an impressive one length victory in the Group 2 Armanasco Stakes on February 25.

With a decent barrier draw (4) and Glen Boss in the saddle, there is no reason why the hot streak won’t continue for the Danny O’Brien trained horse.

Soft Sand is the rightful second favourite to Shopaholic with the Colin Little trained filly in good form.

She also has the advantage of being ridden by prolific jockey Damien Oliver from the ideal barrier eight position.

She ran second Shopaholic last start in the Armanasco which followed victory in the Kevin Hayes Stakes on February 11.

One horse that has the ability to upset the top two on Saturday is bookmaker.com.au $9.50 chance Emmalene.

The Liam Birchley trained filly is coming off a fifth-place effort in the Light Fingers Stakes but beat Shopaholic in the Gucci Stakes last year. She has three career victories from six outings.

Angel of Mercy ($7.00) should not be ignored with the Gerald Ryan trained horse coming off a third-place finish in the Vanity last start but Ryan yesterday expressed concern that 1400 metres may be too short for his promising filly.

“She’s a nice filly and she’s come on terrific since that run,” he said.

“The only negative is the race being 1400 metres. I’d like the race to still be 1600 metres,”

Some value can be found with Total Attraction ($19.00) who is coming off three consecutive victories but faces a step up in class on Saturday in the Group 2 race.

Also included in the bookmaker.com.au market for the 2012 Kewney Stakes are Empress Rock ($11.00), Assertive Eagle ($19.00) and Nocturnelle ($21.00).
