The bookies are taking no chances with Guy Walter’s Group 1 winning filly Streama, the three-year-old opening as the odds-on favourite to win the Surround Stakes 2012 second-up at Warwick Farm’s Chipping Norton Stakes Day meeting on Saturday.
Of the nine fillies accepted to contest the $175,000 Group 2 Patinack Farm Surround Stakes (1400m), running as Warwick Farm Race 4 at 2:55pm, the clear-cup favourite is Streama sitting at a quote of around $1.80 in the online betting markets.
The smart daughter of Stratum put six and a half lengths on her rivals in her culminating spring run, the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m), which also saw her secure the Princess Series Triple Crown.
She resumed when finishing a close second behind fellow Surround Stakes rival Sea Siren in an upset loss in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).
Despite the first-up defeat, Streama is still short-priced in the Surround Stakes odds to atone on Saturday.
She has a good record at the track with a win and three places from four attempts and is also the wet-weather pick.
Warwick Farm Racecourse is currently rated a Heavy (10) and is expected to still be within the Heavy range even if the rain does ease by Saturday.
Streama has twice seen a Heavy-rated track and she did well both times winning the Listed Keith MacKay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last April and then finishing a close third to Pane In the Glass in the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes on a Heavy (9) at Warwick Farm first-up last spring.
Pane In The Glass is also racing in the Surround Stakes 2012 but is one of the double-figure roughies in the markets following her disappointing 14th in the Light Fingers.
Along with Streama there are two other single-figure Surround Stakes chances in second elect Sea Siren, paying around $4.50, and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Hallowell Belle (approx. price $7).
Light Fingers Stakes winner Sea Siren may have defeated Streama last-start, which was her third straight win, but John O’Shea’s lightly-raced Fastnet Rock filly has never seen worse than a Good (3) or further than 1250-metres making her a risky Surround Stakes bet.
Hallowell Belle, meanwhile, was far from disgraced when under a length away third in the Light Fingers Stakes.
The daughter of Starcraft, who also ran second to Streama in the Flight Stakes in the spring and fourth to 2012 Doncaster Mile favourite Atlantic Jewel in the Thousand Guineas, has an imposing Win/Place percentage of 90% and although she hasn’t been on Heavy ground she did win on a Slow (7) at Seymour last August.
The other notable runners to watch in the Surround Stakes odds when latest markets are released at bookmaker.com.au are then the Peter Snowden-trained Detours and Peter Moody’s Choisir filly Cute Emily who could be scratched in favour of a run in the $150,000 Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) at Flemington’s Super Saturday for which she is also accepted.
