Canberra Cup 2012 – Field headed by Zavite

New Zealand horse Zavite will look to add a Canberra Cup 2012 title to his impressive resume in what is the second feature race of Canberra’s eightrace card this Sunday.

The final field of 15 horses was released this morning and the Anthony Cummings trained top weight (62kg) will run from barrier 13 in the 2000 metre stayers’ event.

Having collected more than $1.9 million in prize money, the nine-year-old boasts an impressive record that has included victories in the Launceston Cup, Adelaide Cup and the Ranvet Stakes.

Zavite & Descarado

Zavite (Inside) is the headline act in the 2012 Canberra Cup

The two time Group 1 winner, who has also run in two Melbourne Cups, will use Sunday’s Canberra Cup as preparation ahead of a Ranvet Stakes defence.

Gai Waterhouse trained Tullamore will come from barrier seven on Sunday and is coming off a sixth-place first up effort in the Apollo Stakes on February 25.

The New Zealand gelding has five victories from 26 starts but has not won since June last year.

Peter Moody trained King Diamond will be looking to improve on his five wins from 17 starts and will be ridden by Danny Nikolic from barrier 14.

One horse in good form that will contest the Canberra Cup this weekend is last weekend’s Parramatta Cup winner Praecido.

The New Zealand horse may only have two wins from 28 starts but he looked particularly impressive in the wet last Saturday when taking top honours in the Listed race.

With experienced jockey Corey Brown in the saddle, the four-year-old gelding will start from barrier 11.

Other horses named in the final field for the 2012 Canberra Cup include German horse Budai, Rainbow Styling, Solid Billing, World Wide and Sharp Princess.

The Canberra Cup is a Listed event worth $200,000 in prize money.
