Doncaster hopeful Somepin Anypin will start as the hot favourite in Saturday’s Group 3 2012 Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm.
The Gary Portelli trained gelding opened at $2.40 today in what is an important race on the road to the 2012 Doncaster mile, with the winner receiving an exemption from the ballot.
Portelli said yesterday the four-year-old must win one of his first two starts back from a spell in order to prove his Doncaster worth.
“I think he’ll have to win to qualify for the Doncaster,” he said.
“I’ve got him as good as I can without racing.”
Prior to the spell, Somepin Anypin recorded three consecutive victories including a four-length win in the Hawkesbury Cup.
Jim Cassidy rode him to all of those victories and he will again be in the saddle when the four-year-old starts from the inside on Saturday.
Second favourite in the betting for the 1300 metre race is the Joseph Pride trained Neeson at $4.60.
The five-year-old is coming off a second-place effort in the Southern Cross Stakes and has eight wins from 24 starts.
He is the top weight at 58.5kg and will be ridden by Jay Ford out of barrier four.
Ofcourseican is the next best in the betting at $7.00 and the mare is chasing her first Group victory.
Trainer Ron Quinton said the Liverpool City Cup is a step up in class for the five-year-old that has six career victories.
“Naturally this is a step up in grade for her,” he said.
“We’re going to take a chance in this race. She’s a valuable mare being a winner of six races including a Listed race and she has been placed at Group level.
“We’ll be trying to improve her value and she’s a very honest horse.”
Quinton said he will discuss race tactics closely with jockey Kathy O’Hara who will take charge of the horse out of barrier three.
Chris Waller trained Triple Elegance ($8.00) is not too far away in the betting and will be ridden by well known Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman from barrier eight.
Some value can be found with the two Gai Waterhouse trained horses named in the field Fast Clip ($11.00) and More Strawberries ($13.00).
The outsider in the 2012 Liverpool City Cup is former Group 1 winner Mirjulisa Lass who is currently paying $71.00.
