One of the three exciting Group race features running at Warwick Farm for Chipping Norton Stakes Day this Saturday is the fillies-only 2012 Surround Stakes, the field for which has now been released by Racing NSW.
Scheduled to run as Warwick Farm Race 4 at 2:55pm (NSW), the $175,000 Group 2 Patinack Farm Surround Stakes (1400m) has drawn a final field of nine three-year-old fillies, the same number of acceptors the day’s marquee event, the $350,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), also attracted for 2012.
The top-rated of the contenders in the Patinack Farm-sponsored event is Guy Walter’s Stratum filly Streama who drew nicely in the Surround Stakes barrier draw with gate four.
After winning the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last October by an easy six and a half lengths, Streama resumed with a good first-up second in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).
Going up to the 1400-metres at Warwick Farm for the Surround, Streama could be hard to beat as she took out the Group 2 Furious Stakes at the track and distance last September.
The Furious Stakes was the opening race in the three-event Princess Series that Streama collected the Triple Crown in thanks to her subsequent Tea Rose Stakes and Flight Stakes wins.
“I was disappointed she didn’t win (first-up) but not disappointed in her,” Walter said.
“She ran well and has done well since.
“She didn’t win her first start last time either.”
Also happy with Streama’s first-up effort despite the defeat was jockey Hugh Bowman who retains the ride on Saturday.
“I was delighted with her first-up and if she does the same as she did in the spring you would expect her to be very hard to beat,” Bowman said.
Walter will also be represented in the Surround Stakes by his up-and-coming Commands filly Appearance drawn wide in gate eight with Rod Quinn engaged for her maiden stakes assignment.
The filly that brought Streama’s winning streak to an end, Light Fingers Stakes winner Sea Siren has also been accepted for the 2012 Surround Stakes field.
John O’Shea’s consistent Fastnet Rock three-year-old may be searching for her fourth win on the trot, but Sea Siren has suffered an early blow drawn barrier nine.
Still, she cannot be discounted and is worth a definite look in at the Surround Stakes odds as she jumped from a similar barrier (eight) to beat Streama last start.
Light Fingers Stakes third placegetter Hallowell Belle will also get another chance at a Group 2 win on Saturday with Gai Waterhouse’s daughter of Starcraft to start from barrier seven.
The Light Fingers was Hallowell Belle’s first run back in Waterhouse’s care following an eight-start stint with premier Victorian horseman Peter moody that produced three Group 1 top four finishes including a second to Streama in the Flight Stakes.
Other notable Surround Stakes chances include John Thompson’s out-of-form Pane In The Glass (barrier two), Peter Snowden’s promising Ad Valorem filly Detours (barrier five) coming off a win at Rosehill last Saturday, and the Peter Moody-trained Cute Emily drawn on the rails and last seen running third in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
