David & Scott Brunton’s superior Tasmanian mare Lady Lynette looks the horse to beat in the 2012 Schweppervescence Trophy field at Flemington on Super Saturday this weekend.
A final field of 12 fillies and mares has been accepted for the $150,000 Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) this year, the event to run as Flemington Race 8 at 4:45pm on Saturday.
Leading the Schweppervescence Trophy field this year is 58.5kg topweight Lady Lynette who is also likely to dominate the horse racing betting markets on the race formerly known as the Matron Stakes after coming up trumps with barrier three.
Lady Lynette is out for back-to-back stakes wins after the always-honest Ladoni seven-year-old took out the Listed Vamos Stakes (1400m) back home at Launceston on February 15.
Twelve months ago Lady Lynette also won the 2011 edition of the Vamos before going on to run fifth behind subsequent Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker in the Schweppervescence Trophy.
Over her 47-career start to date, which has netted over $1 million in prize money, Lady Lynette has made many appearances in the Melbourne Group races contesting over 20 black-type features in Victoria over the years.
Last year’s Schweppervescence Trophy winner Pinker Pinker came via a win in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.
This year’s Angus Armanasco Stakes winner Shopaholic goes to the $300,000 Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Saturday instead, however the third placed Cute Emily has been accepted for the Schweppervescence.
Peter Moody’s improving Choisir filly Cute Emily has also been accepted for $175,000 Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm this weekend, but connections are more likely to run her at the roomier Flemington track for the first time.
Following Lady Lynette the next two top-rated of the Schweppervescence Trophy hopefuls this year are then Chris Waller’s Flying Spur six-year-old Vintedge, winner of the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes on Emirates Stakes Day last year, and the John Gunning-trained Hi Belle who have drawn barriers eight and nine respectively.
Vintedge comes off a seventh place finish in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 25, a race won by Hi Belle who put a minimum two lengths on her rivals.
Other Schweppervescence Trophy chances coming off an impressive lead-up run are Biancon Rose (barrier two) who ran second to Raspeberries in the Group 3 PFD Food Services Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday, Aaron Purcell’s in-form Invincible Spirit four-year-old Spirit Song (barrier four) and the Mick Price-trained Eternal Sunshine who has suffered a setback to scoring consecutive win number three after drawing barrier 12 of 12 for Saturday.
The complete Schweppervescence Trophy field and barrier draw for 2012 can be found in the table below.
