Flemington Super Saturday 2012 Race Fields & Program

This weekend’s Victoria’s premier racing venue Flemington will be host to the biggest Melbourne Autumn Carnival meeting for the season so far with a bumper nine-race program to run for Super Saturday of Racing 2012, the fields and schedule for which can be found below.

Hay List

Hay List faces a mounting list of obstacles to win the 2012 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington's Super Saturday

Featuring an all black type card, Flemington’s Super Saturday is headlined by two elite level features all bookmaker.com.au punters will want to get in on.

The first is a race recoginised as the country’s premier sprint, the $1 million Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) to run as Flemington Race 6 at 3:15pm.

The 2012 Newmarket Handicap has long been hailed as the race where Hay List can finally add another Group 1 title to his record in the absence of his perennial defeater Black Caviar.

In a double-blow for John McNair’s hulking galloper, however, Hay List came up with a horror barrier 15 draw and the 58.5kg topweight in the bumper 23-horse Newmarket Handicap field, which is the biggest in field in 22-years.

The last time the Newmarket Handicap had 23 starters or more was back in 1990 when Gold Trump beat home 23 rivals.

Some of his main dangers include Emirates Stakes winner Albert The Fat (56.5kg) in barrier seven, Peter Snowden’s champion mare Beaded (55.5kg) one inside of him in 14, Joe Pride’s thrill machine Rain Affair (55.5kg) who came up trumps with gate one as they look to score consecutive win No. 10 as Black Caviar did in the race 12 months ago, Rob Heathcote’s last-start Oakleigh Plate champ Woorim (55.5kg) in barrier two and the smart John O’Shea-trained three-year-old Foxwedge who gets in on the 50kg minimum but who must overcome barrier 17.

The other Group 1 feature race fans will be waiting for at Flemington on Saturday follows as Race 7 at 4:00pm, the $1 million Dubai Australian Cup (2000m).

Where the Newmarket attracted close to capacity, the 2012 Australian Cup field features just nine horses making for an easier affair for the punters.

Leading the field is former Melbourne Cup winner Americain in gate nine, the champ to have his first start for new trainer David Hayes.

Americain may face just eight rivals in Flemington’s other famous cup clash, but the quality of contenders is high with new Australian Cup betting favourite Lucas Cranach (barrier one) coming off a win over a similar field in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on February 25.

It is a field packed full of imports in this year’s Australian Cup with the sole Aussie-bred gallopers being Neville Parnham’s Perth hero Playing God (barrier two) and Caulfield Cup winning mare Southern Speed (barrier three).

The Group racing gets underway right from the kick-off for Super Saturday with the $125,000 Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) featuring Golden Slipper-bound Snitzerland and Blue Diamond Stakes third placegetter Armed For Action at 12:08pm.

Stakes racing continues with Flemington Race 2 as Satin Shoes leads out a smart field of three-year-olds in the $100,000 Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m), which is then followed by a bumper juvenile’s feature where the likes of one-time Blue Diamond fancy Jimando, Chairman’s Stakes winner Mama’s Choice and Black Caviar’s undefeated half-brother All Too Hard are engaged for the $250,000 Group 2 Henry Bucks Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Following the VRC Sires’ Produce is then Race 4 – the $200,000 Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) where many a spring cup horse will come head-to-head including Lexus Stakes winner Niwot and Caulfield Cup runner-up Green Moon.

Dynamic Pins filly Shopaholic, winner of the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) on Blue Diamond Day will then shoot for Group race win No. 3 in the $300,000 Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) in Race 5 at 2:35pm.

After the double-shot of Group 1’s the Flemington action then comes to a close with the $150,000 Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) featuring the likes of Lady Lynette and Hi Belle as Race 8 and then the $100,000 Listed Super Saturday Stakes (1400m) runs as the last at 5:25pm, the field headed by multiple Group 1 winner Yosei.

See below for the full Flemington Super Saturday 2012 race program complete with the fields and race times for all nine events.
