Final Field and Barrier Draw – 2012 Newmarket Handicap

The final field for the 2012 Newmarket Handicap has now been named and impressive sprinter Hay List will be the headline act in the nation’s most prestigious sprint on Saturday.

With wonder mare Black Caviar not running, the John McNair trained gelding gets his chance to show just how good he is and build on his already outstanding record when he runs from barrier 15 this weekend.

The six-year-old has chalked up 14 career victories from 21 starts and six of those have come over the Newmarket distance of 1200 metres.

Hay List

Hay List is the horse to beat in Saturday's Newmarket Handicap

Despite his quality, it will be no easy race for the top weight (58.5kg), with the Group 1 event attracting an unbelievable line up of the nation’s top sprinters.

Hay List will have to beat the likes of Bel Sprinter (52.5kg) and Rain Affair (55.5kg) who are carrying 6kg and 3kg less than him respectively.

Rain Affair will run from the inside barrier in his first race in Melbourne and will be looking to score his 10th straight victory after being undefeated in Sydney for more than a year.

Only a second-place finish in the gelding’s second ever race has got in the way of him having a flawless career record to date.

Trained by Jason Warren, Bel Sprinter is on track to chase top billings in the $1 million event after passing a vet check on a superficial wound by Racing Victoria officials yesterday.

The four-year-old gelding will be bandaged when he runs from barrier 13 on Saturday and will have to get a final clearance from the vets on race morning.

Toorak Toff, who is looking to achieve the unbelievable feat of winning the Newmarket first up, ran impressively with Damien Oliver in the saddle during a trial at Flemington yesterday.

The two time Group 1 winner has won six times from 17 outings and he will be looking to build on that over his preferred 1200 metre distance.

John O’Shea trained colt Foxwedge also impressed during a trial run at Flemington yesterday and the three-year-old is coming off a decent fourth-place effort in the Group 1 Coolmore Lightning Stakes.

The Fastnet Rock colt has three wins from 10 starts and has already amassed over $500,000 in prize money.

Other horses named in the 2012 Newmarket Handicap final field include Beaded, Buffering, Albert the Fat, Woorim and Temple of Boom.
