Somepin Anypin will start his run towards the 2012 Doncaster Mile when he runs in the Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
On Monday, the classy Gary Portelli trained gelding was amongst the 167 horses who were given a 52kg limit when weights were released for the coveted 1600 metre race.
The four-year-old has six wins from 12 starts but with 202 horses nominated for the Doncaster, Gary Portelli believes he must win a qualifying race over the next five weeks to guarantee a start in the $1.5 million event.
He will get his first opportunity this Saturday in the Liverpool City Cup and it is a crucial stop on the road to the Doncaster, especially considering the winner scores exemption from the ballot.
Portelli believes the four-year-old will need to show in either his first or second race back whether he is Doncaster material.
“I think he’ll have to win to qualify for the Doncaster,” he said.
“I’ve got him as good as I can without racing.
“He needs to come back a better horse because he is meeting stronger opposition.”
It is the gelding’s first race since he was spelled in September following victory in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup. He also won two races in a row on the way to that Hawkesbury Cup victory.
Portelli is hoping for good weather with Somepin Anypin’s best results all coming on dry tracks.
Given he has drawn the inside barrier, he will be especially disadvantaged if the weather turns foul and there is a wet track at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
“His best runs have been when the tracks have been dry,” Portelli said.
One thing on the four-year-old’s side this Saturday will be jockey Jim Cassidy, who has ridden him to five of his six career victories.
The gelding will have to overcome a quality field in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup, with the likes of Joseph Pride trained Neeson and last year’s Kewney Stakes winner Do Ra Mi named to start.
The Doncaster Mile is the richest 1600 metre race in the country and will take place on April 21, 2012.
