Chipping Norton Stakes 2012 Field of 9 Released

A diminutive but top-class field of nine gallopers has been accepted to contest the 2012 Chipping Norton Stakes, the mile feature headlining a bumper day’s racing at Warwick Farm this Saturday.

Despite a fall at Rosehill on Tuesday, Blake Shinn has been cleared to ride Pinker Pinker in the 2012 Chipping Norton Stakes

Due to jump at 4:22pm (NSW) as Warwick Farm Race 6, this year’s edition of the $350,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) features two previous winners of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival classic.

Defending champion Danleigh has come up trumps with barrier three, and is one of three final acceptors for Sydney premiership winning trainer Chris Waller.

Mujahid eight-year-old Danleigh goes into the Chipping Norton Stakes third-up for 2012, their most recent effort being a credible third behind Joe Pride’s excitement machine Rain Affair in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m).

Waller’s two other runners are Shoot Out in barrier five as well as 2010 Chipping Norton Stakes hero Rangirangdoo, the veteran nine-year-old drawn in barrier six.

Recent stable acquisition Shoot Out, the High Chaparral five-year-old previously prepared in Queensland by John Wallace, has had two runs for Waller for two eye-catching placings.

First they ran third to Rain Affair in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) on February 11 before their last-start second, again to Rain Affair, in the Apollo Stakes.

Popular old warhorse Rangirangdoo, meanwhile, ran ninth in both the Expressway and Apollo but the multiple Group 1 hero is tipped for improvement this weekend.

Also with multiple entries in the Chipping Norton Stakes field for Saturday is Patinack Farm head trainer John Thompson who will be represented by Trusting, to be ridden by international hoop Joao Moreira from gate four, and Gathering in barrier two.

On the rails in barrier one is Gai Waterhouse’s six-year-old gelding Herculian Prince, apprentice hoop Adam Hyeronimus retaining the ride on the former The Metropolitan Handicap winner after a successful fourth first-up in the Apollo Stakes.

As expected, Waterhouse did not accept for her other Chipping Norton Stakes entry Tullamore, the Caulfield Cup third placegetter to go into Sunday’s $200,000 Listed Canberra Cup (2000m) instead.

One of the headline Chipping Norton Stakes hopefuls this year will of course be Cox Plate champ Pinker Pinker, Greg Eurell’s talented four-year-old Reset mare coming up with the far outside barrier nine.

With Blake Shinn engaged for the ride, Pinker Pinker resumed with a good first-up second behind Kiwi galloper King Mufhasa in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) on February 25 and should improve on that going up to the 1600-metres on Saturday.

“I honestly think she got a lot out of that (Futurity run) and she heads into this race on Saturday very well,” Eurell said.

“Her work has been good.

“I think she’ll certainly be very competitive.”

Shinn, who injured himself after falling at the Rosehill barrier trials on Tuesday, has been cleared for the Chipping Norton ride, a relief for Eurell.

“There were a couple of anxious moments this morning but all reports are he’ll be OK to ride her,” Eurell said.

Rounding out the 2012 Chipping Norton Stakes final field are then the Peter Moody-trained Commands five-year-old Mr Make Believe (barrier eight) coming off a win over 1500-metres at Rosehill from last Saturday, and Joe Pride’s Doncaster Mile winning mare Sacred Choice out to improve on her last-start 10th in the Apollo.
