Adelaide Cup 2012 Field & Barriers – Drunken Sailor Draws 20

One of the premier Cup races on the annual Australian racing calendar is Monday’s 2012 Adelaide Cup at Morphettville, and early favourite Drunken Sailor has some work to do after coming up with the extreme outside gate in the capacity final field.

Drunken Sailor

Drunken Sailor will be out to become the second horse in as many years to win the Adelaide Cup from the far outside barrier

The $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup (3200m) has this year drawn a full field of 20 starters, Michael Moroney’s Cup performing import Drunken Sailor coming up with the disastrous gate 20.

The online horse racing odds on Drunken Sailor to win the Adelaide Cup 2012 may now drift after the in-form seven-year-old’s barrier blow, but the 59.5kg topweight won’t be without their fans.

Drunken Sailor showed they were ready for a big year with a gritty win in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) at Flemington last Saturday.

There’s also the fact that last year’s Adelaide Cup winner Muir took out the lucrative feature from barrier 18 of 18, so a wide draw isn’t statistically against Drunken Sailor.

Muir also came via a run in the Roy Higgins last year having finished third.

Another early Adelaide Cup favourite Norsqui, the second heaviest-weighted runner on 56kg, has also drawn wide in barrier 19, the Walter McShane-trained five-year-old last seen putting two and a half lengths on Drunken Sailor in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) on February 15.

Some of the other notable Adelaide Cup acceptors that fared better in the barrier draw include Grant Williams’ Perth Cup winning mare Western Jewel (barrier 4), the Patrick Payne-trained Fieldmaster (barrier 2) coming off a close third in the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m), and the Michael Sell-trained Enchanting Waters (barrier eight) who was the emphatic winner of the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at the track last Saturday.

Meanwhile in the latest Adelaide Cup odds the Peter Moody-trained Encosta De Lago five-year-old Hanks is the second favourite behind Drunken Sailor followed by Robert Smerdon’s consistent mare Persian Star and Norsqui.

Hanks is out for their third win on the trot on Monday, the gelding last seen beating home fellow Adelaide Cup hopeful Rowland in the Listed Moonee Valley Night Cup (2500m) on February 24.

Prior to that Hanks proved himself as a genuine stayer with a smart win over 3000-metres at the Valley.

This year’s Adelaide Cup field is full of genuine talent and exciting stayers with other top-name entries including Kevin Mayer’s Kiwi raider Crocodile Canyon (barrier 11) and another runner from Robert Smerdon’s Caulfield stables Saddler’s Story (barrier nine) who comes off a credible fifth in the Roy Higgins.
