Bel Sprinter passed a check this morning by Racing Victoria vet ahead of Saturday’s 2012 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.
The Jason Warren trained horse was forced to undergo checks following a superficial wound which occurred after the gelding lashed out in the paddock on Sunday.
The current $5.00 fixed odds second favourite at bookmaker.com.au was bandaged as he underwent a testing 1000 metre gallop.
He was bandaged the same way for this morning’s fitness test as he will be on Saturday but the four-year-old will have to undergo a final check on race day.
Bel Sprinter will run at 52.5kg in Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 event, six kilograms lighter than race favourite Hay List.
The gelding has an impressive record of five wins from seven outings and will be ridden by regular jockey Ben Melham on Saturday.
Toorak Toff impressed in a hit out this morning at Flemington and the four-year-old will make history if he can cause an upset win on Saturday, becoming the first horse in 95 years to win the Newmarket first-up.
The Rick Hore-Lacy trained horse last ran in November and has six victories from 17 outings.
The final field for the 2012 Newmarket Handicap will be released tomorrow and set to be included are high quality horses Rain Affair, Fox Wedge and Buffering.
