Mosheen wins the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington

Mosheen has overcome her wide barrier draw to win the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington Racecourse today March 3, 2012.

Race favourite Helmet was never a chance to win the 2012 Australian Guineas after missing the start.

Mosheen won the race by two lengths ahead of Strike The Stars, who finished second, and Mister Milton, who held on for third.

Trainer Robert Smerdon couldn’t believe the magnificent ride that Mosheen was given by jockey Damien Oliver in today’s 2012 Australian Guineas.

“I’ve got to see the replay. I don’t know how he got into that spot,” Smerdon said.

Smerdon admitted they had high hopes coming into today’s race.

“We were really getting excited and confident,” he said.

“She’s obviously very very talented and she’s never run poorly.

“The plan’s always been to go to Sydney for the Coolmore (Classic) and the Doncaster’s (Mile) beyond that.”

Co-owner Phil Sly over the moon following the 2012 Australian Guineas.

“She’s a great filly and Danny (Nikolic is ) going to get the greatest kick out of it,” Sly said.

Nikolic gave credit to Mosheen’s full race team for today’s 2012 Australian Guineas win.

“I’m thrilled to bits because it’s a real team effort with Robert Smerdon, Phil Sly, all his team,” Nikolic said.

“I just put the finishing touches on her.

“I kept getting the runs that I needed.

“It was a good win.

“She’s a class filly.

“I always thought Atlantic Jewel was better than her in the spring but I think she’d test her now.”
