Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Jockey Damien Oliver has overcome an horrific race fall at Moonee Valley last night to win the 2012 Listed Roy Higgins Quality at Flemington Racecourse today aboard Drunken Sailor.
Oliver was released from hospital in order to make today’s Australian Guineas Day program.
Drunken Sailor won the race ahead of second place-getter Our Serena and third place-getter Rowland.
Persian Star held on to pass the post in fourth position.
Today’s run was the third for Drunken Sailor since being transferred to his new trainer Michael Moroney‘s stables at Flemington.
The seven-year-old gelding was previously trained in the United Kingdom by Luca Cumani.
Moroney was impressed with the performance of Drunken Sailor, who had carried the top weight of 60 kilograms.
“Probably (at) the half mile he wasn’t travelling that flash,” Moroney said.
“He just hung on.
“It’s hard to do under this weight.”
Drunken Sailor will now go on towards the Group 2 Adelaide Cup at Morphettville on March 12, 2012.
“We’ve got two miles to go in the Adelaide Cup,” he said.
Moroney was grateful that Damien Oliver decided to come to the races, despite last night’s events.
“I couldn’t believe that he would be here,” the trainer said.
“It goes to show you how fit and tough he is.”
Damien Oliver was aboard promising talent Like An Eagle in The Drain Man Premium Handicap last night when the horse broke his leg and fell heavily on to the track.
“(This was) worth getting out of hospital for,” Oliver said.
“I couldn’t find a reason not for me to come and I had a nice book”
“It takes a lot for us to not make it.
“Even though it’s raining, it’s Australian Guineas day. It’s a good day to be here.”
