Fire Thunderbolt wins the 2012 Streets Ice Cream Stakes

Adelaide gelding Fire Thunderbolt has made it two wins from two starts, taking out the 2012 Streets Ice Cream Stakes at Flemington today.

The Phillip Stokes trained two-year-old took had the 1000 metre Listed race wrapped up with one hundred metres to go, going on to win by three lengths ahead of Mandla and Imprimis.

Paying $7.00 at bookmaker.com.au, Fire Thunderbolt kicked off the 2012 Australian Guineas Day at Flemington with a win that pleased trainer Stokes.

“It was an impressive win. He’s a good horse with a bit of upside.”

With his second win from just two starts, Fire Thunderbolt has already paid back his bargain $26,000 price tag.

Following today’s victory, Stokes may be inclined to test the gelding against some higher quality competition in the future.

“[Fire Thunderbolt] looks like a ready made two-year-old, maybe we will raise the bar,” he said.

Third-place finisher Imprimis ($2.10) went out hard early, leading for most of the race before being passed by Fire Thunderbolt and Mandla in the final quarter.

Ridden by Craig Newitt, Mandla paid a healthy $4.20 for second place bookmaker.com.au.

Pre-race favourite Rhandara who started at a short $2.70, got out of the gates nicely but that was the best it got for the two-year-old filly who finished a disappointing fourth.

It was a great start to what is set to be a sensational day of racing in the 2012 Australian Guineas Day at Flemington.

The prized events will come later in the day, highlighted by Group 1 Australian Guineas at 4:00pm (AEDT).
