Silver Slipper Stakes 2012 Wet Track Tips

This Saturday at Rosehill Gardens one of the premier events on the card will be the 2012 Silver Slipper Stakes, and while the field of lightly-raced and maiden juveniles may not have much form to go on, below the expert team of tipsters at Races.com.au have done the research and come up with the best wet track tips for the Golden Slipper lead-up.

The $200,000 Group 2 Patinack Farm Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) is set to jump at 3:40pm as Rosehill Race 5 on Saturday.

Current Silver Slipper Stakes betting markets on the 11-horse field at Luxbet are led by Gai Waterhouse’s $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes-bound Pierro at a quote of $2.80.

The son of Lonhro is drawn nicely to stay out of trouble on a track that is set to be rated Heavy (8/9) with Pierro to jump from to jump from gate seven with Nash Rawiller engaged.

Pierro has had just one start for one win to date after taking out the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (1000m) on debut at Randwick last October on a Dead (4) track.

He may not have the fitness edge on Saturday or second-up and wet-track records to consider, but Waterhouse believes he can handle the ground and his breeding suggests she may be right.

His sire Lonhro started twice on heavy ground and ran a second and third, they also won two from three on slow tracks over their stunning 35 start career that produced 25 Group and Listed wins.

Pierro’s dam Miss Right Note also won one of her four starts on Heavy tracks.

Another breeding-line that often produces good wet-track performers is More Than Ready.

There are three sons of More Than Ready in the 2012 Silver Slipper Stakes field with #2 Faustus ($9.50 Luxbet), #3 Assassinate ($9.50 Luxbet) and #10 Brave Soul ($26 Luxbet).

Despite the good breeding and the fact Faustus scored a win over subsequent three-length Rosehill winner Kuchinskaya on debut last November, their trainer John O’Shea doesn’t believe they will like the heavy going.

“I don’t think he’ll go around on a wet track,” O’Shea said.

“He didn’t handle wet ground when he trialled the other day.”

If the trainer isn’t backing them, neither are we.

Assassinate, however, is the Races.com.au team’s second favourite runner in the Silver Slipper this year behind deserved top elect Pierro.

One of the Luxbet market movers in from $11 to $9.50, the striking black colt made an impression on debut carrying 58kg to victory over 1000-metres at Wyong on February 19 with Corey Brown aboard.

Brown will be aboard another Silver Slipper contender on Saturday, the Peter Snowden-trained Mediung ($7 Luxbet) in barrier two, but the ace hoop holds a nice opinion of Assassinate after riding him to victory.

“He was good at Wyong,” Brown said.

“He may be more a late two-year-old, a three-year-old, but he did everything right on debut and won untouched.”

The track conditions really throw this one wide open, but the Races.com.au team still fancy Pierro for the first-up win with the Silver Slipper Stakes trifecta to be finished off by Assassinate and Nediym’s Quest.

#6 Nediym’s Quest is another Silver Slipper Stakes betting market mover in from $11 to $8.50 since Luxbet markets opened.

The General Nediym colt out of Dheere mare Zabere proved their wet-track-handling potential when they enjoyed a smart two length barrier trial win over 900-metres at Rosehill on February 21.

That was the same day Faustus got rolled in a separate 900-metre trial and the track was running at Heavy igniting trainer David Pfieffer’s hopes of a successful debut in the Silver Slipper for Nediym’s Quest.
