Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Manawanui is approaching odds-on territory in the 2012 Hobartville Stakes betting markets for this Saturday at Rosehill, and deservedly so if you ask the Races.com.au team as things look more and more in the favourite’s favour with the wet weather in Sydney playing havoc to the tracks.
The course proper at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse is currently rated a Heavy (9), with the rail out six metres the entire circuit.
With showers still falling there is little chance of a track upgrade before the $200,000 Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) jumps as Rosehill Race 6 at 4:20pm Saturday afternoon.
Still, no connections have made an early decision to scratch with the full 13 starters plus the one emergency remaining in the Hobartville Stakes field at this stage.
The majority of runners have remained steady at their opening price in the Hobartville Stakes odds at Luxbet, with Ron Leemon’s Golden Rose winner Manawanui one of only two market firmers.
The other is Induna, originally a $151 roughie now into an only slightly shorter price of $126.
Peter Snowden’s Elusive Quality gelding Induna has a win on Slow ground and a third place finish from an inside gate in their only look at a Heavy (8) track.
The distance on Saturday is definitely short of their best, but at their juicy price Induna is the Races.com.au value bet to place.
They ran third first-up over the same distance in the aforementioned Heavy-track-rated run last August and they resume again on Saturday last seen going down a nose to Sangster in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).
Manawanui, however, remains the Races.com.au team’s favourite to win the Hobartville Stakes and the punters agree as they have firmed in from $2.10 to $2 at our preferred online bookmaker Luxbet.
The Oratorio gelding comes off a close first-up second to fellow Hobartville Stakes hopeful Hot Snitzel ($5 Luxbet) in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m).
Unlike Hot Snitzel who has never seen a Heavy track and has a dud second-up record of zero-from-three, Manawanui is a pervious heavy track winner and has won both of their second-up starts.
While earlier in the week their wider barrier 10 (into 9) Hobartville barrier looked poor, with the now Heavy track being further out off the rail is sure to be an advantage.
Another who believes Manawanui will be hard to beat on Saturday is in fact rival trainer Peter Snowden who will saddle up three other Hobartville Stakes hopes outside of Induna.
“Ronny (Leemon) was a bit disappointed he (Manawanui) got beaten but I thought his run was outstanding first-up,” Snowden admitted.
“He’s a quality horse and no doubt whatever he contests they are going to know he’s there.
“He’s the best three-year-old up here at the moment.”
Other Hobartville Stakes horses with good wet weather form include Guy Walter’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes winner Doctor Doom, Galah and Ambidexter.
Galah ($9.50 Luxbet) on the rails and Ambidexter ($41) in gate nine and two more Snowden’s runners, his last rep being Free Wheeling at $13 in barrier 12, the last two to come in a barrier if the emergency comes out.
“They are four really nice horses but are all looking for that mile (1600m) plus,” Snowden said of his Hobartville Stakes quartet.
“All those four horses will make their presence felt in the autumn but in their right races.
“Saturday is not their right race.
“I think three of them – Galah, Free Wheeling and Ambidexter – are looking for the mile and I’ve targeted the Randwick Guineas with them.
“I feel the Randwick Guineas is the right race for them while Induna is naturally heading towards the (Australian) Derby.”
The $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) is set to run at Royal Randwick on March 17 while the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) takes place on April 14.
