2012 Silver Slipper Stakes Betting Update – Punters Assassinate Pierro

Gai Waterhouse’s resuming Breeders Plate winner Pierro may be the short-priced favourite to win the Silver Slipper Stakes 2012 at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday leading into next month’s Golden Slipper, but the punters have a different tip and are coming for last-start Wyong winner Assassinate.

Running as Rosehill Race 5 at 3:40pm, the $200,000 Group 2 Patinack Farm Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) features a field of 11 two-year-olds lead by Lonhro colt Pierro.

One of the top fancies in the Luxbet futures to go all the way and win the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the $3.5 million Group 1 AAMI Golden Slipper (1200m) back at Rosehill on April 7, Pierro is also top of the 2012 Silver Slipper Stakes odds for Saturday at a quote of $2.80.

While Waterhouse is confident Pierro, in barrier seven with Nash Rawiller aboard, has what it takes to win first-up and add another black-type to their Listed Thoroughbred Breeders Plate win at Randwick back on October 1, it looks like the new Silver Slipper Stakes tip is for another runner.

Drawn one inside of Pierro in barrier six with leading jockey Glyn Schofield engaged is the Gerald Ryan-trained Assassinate who has been the definite Silver Slipper Stakes betting market mover at Luxbet.

Since markets opened the More Than Ready colt has been heavily backed in from $11 to $9.50 to win their second career start and remain unbeaten.

Assassinate hit the headlines before their race debut at Wyong on February 19 when they were smashed by punters in the early 2012 Golden Slipper odds at Luxbet firming in from triple figures to a $26.

They came in even more and are now at $19 in the early Golden Slipper markets after they easily accounted for their rivals in the maiden run when beating home Wynnstay Avenue by two lengths when ridden by Corey Brown.

The other early market firmer for the Silver Slipper on Saturday is David Pfieffer’s unraced General Nediym colt Nediym’s Quest in from $11 to $8.50 through Luxbet.

Markets on the other main dangers have all drifted out including Gimcrack Stakes winner Hussousa ($4 out to $4.20 Luxbet), the Peter Snowden-trained Meidung ($6.50 out to $7 Luxbet), John O’Shea’s More Than Ready colt Faustus ($8.50 out to $9.50 Luxbet) and A Bridge Too Far ($15 out to $17 Luxbet) who is another debutant.

One major unknown for the punters is how these young juveniles will handle the wet weather track, Rosehill currently rated a Heavy (9) with more rain on the way.

Not one of the youngsters has been on a Slow or Heavy track under race conditions, but Waterhouse believes Pierro will be up to the challenge and the muddy conditions will work in the favourite’s favour.

Waterhouse, however, was also aware of the smart field Pierro was coming up against and wasn’t discounting the chances of some of the others both on Saturday and in the upcoming Golden Slipper.

“He’s right up there with Raceway – I like him,” Waterhouse said comparing Pierro to her current $6.50 Golden Slipper second elect at Luxbet Raceway.

“I’m very happy with the horse.

“He has grown a bit, he is very big, very strong, masculine.

“A lot of the horses that are trying to be there on (Golden) Slipper Day that are really serious horses are in this race on Saturday.

“The Gimcrack Stakes winner (Hussousa) is in the race and John O’Shea’s horse (Faustus) is a serious horse.

“He beat Kuchinskaya on debut and Kuchinskaya has since won by about three lengths.”
