2012 Hobartville Stakes Odds – Manawanui Firming Favourite

They may have gone down first-up a fortnight ago, but the money is firmly back on Ron Leemon’s Golden Rose champion Manawanui to return to the winner’s stall at Rosehill this Saturday, the boom youngster dominating the Hobartville Stakes 2012 odds.

Hot Snitzel

Hot Snitzel is out to defeat Manawanui for the second time in Saturday's 2012 Hobartville Stakes

Oratorio gelding Manawanui returned after a four month break to run a long-head away second behind fellow Hobartville Stakes rival Hot Snitzel in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on February 18.

The gun galloper now returns to their favourite track at Rosehill where they remain undefeated having won the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) and the lucrative Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at the Sydney course last September.

Twelve hundred first-up also didn’t suit Manawanui and going up to the 1400-metres of the $200,000 Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at 4:20pm on Saturday will work more in their favour.

Also in the favourite’s favour is the barrier 10, into nine with emergency out, where they will be able to stay out of trouble with the likely Heavy-rated track.

While the wet weather in Sydney could be a concern for a number of the other major Hobartville Stakes players Manawanui is proven on all types of ground and jockey Glyn Schofield, who missed the first-up ride on them because of other commitments, is stoked to reunite with the three-year-old.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on him,” Schofield said.

“He has trained on from the Royal Sovereign and will train on again from Saturday.”

As such the punters are getting on them and Manawanui has firmed in from $2.10 to $2 in the latest Hobartville Stakes betting markets at Luxbet.

There are three other Hobartville Stakes hopefuls at single-figures at Luxbet, the next of which is Manawanui’s last-start defeater Hot Snitzel at $5.

Gerald Ryan’s smart Snitzel gelding became a dual Group 2 winner when they scored a shock victory over Manawanui in the Royal Sovereign, the victory adding to their three length romp in the Group 2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm last June.

Although Hot Snitzel has the record over the distance, the perfect lead-up run and a tidy barrier four draw, they have a less than impressive second-up record having failed to finish top three in their three second-up attempts to date.

“There have been excuses,” Ryan said.

“He did heaps wrong at his second start in a race.

“His next second-up start was in the Golden Slipper and then the other one was in the straight race, the Coolmore.

“That was his last run as a colt, he was gelded the next day.

“It has made a huge difference.

“He’s stronger now than he was in the spring.

“He’s got stronger every preparation.”

Hot Snitzel ran a distant 12th of 14 behind Sepoy in last year’s Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) t Rosehill in April and finished two and a half lengths off the Darley-owned champ again when sixth in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight on Derby Day.

Ryan remains confident that they have improved since their last second-up attempt but maybe not enough to get the betting of Manawanui again.

“If the track is heavy it might be advantageous to be wide.

“Manawanui is the horse to beat.”

Rounding out the top four are then Peter Moody’s Royal Sovereign Stakes third placed Moment Of Change ($7 Luxbet) and one of four Peter Snowden-trained chances in the race, Galah ($9 Luxbet) who has also saluted on a mud track before.

Meanwhile other three-year-olds that have won or placed top three on Heavy ground that are at a juicier Hobartville Stakes price at Luxbet include another two Snowden runner Ambidexter ($41 Luxbet) and Victoria Derby runner-up Induna ($151 Luxbet), and Spring Champion Stakes winner Doctor Doom ($19 Luxbet).
