Pierro Leads Silver Slipper Stakes 2012 Field

One of the best-backed youngsters heading towards the iconic Golden Slipper in April, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pierro is set to have just their second career start in the 2012 Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

Scheduled to run as Rosehill Race 5 at 3:40pm (NSW time), the $200,000 Group 2 Patinack Farm Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) has this year attracted a final field of 11 two-year-olds who will be fighting it out for the 2012 Golden Slipper ballot exemption on offer to the winner.

To wear the No. 1 saddlecloth in barrier one with Nash Rawiller aboard is promising Lonhro colt Pierro.

Pierro debuted last October at Randwick to win the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) and goes to race conditions on Saturday for the first time since.

Showing they were on track for their big Group 2 assignment, Pierro impressed Waterhouse with a strong barrier trial win at Rosehill at the start of the month.

Three juveniles from the Waterhouse stables currently occupy lines two to four in the Luxbet futures for the $3.5 million Group 1 AAMI Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 7, one of which is Pierro at $11.

Four of Peirro’s Silver Slipper Stakes rivals for Saturday have also enjoyed a previous race success including the ideally-drawn Faustus.

Prepared by John O’Shea More Than Ready colt Faustus has come up trumps with barrier three on Saturday with Jim Cassidy aboard as they race for the first time since beating home Kuchinskaya at Rosehill over 1100-metres on November 12.

Another resuming runner with the perfect draw in the Silver Slipper is the Peter Snowden-trained Meidung in barrier two with Corey Brown booked for the ride.

The Bernardini filly won on debut at Rosehill by three lengths in October and is rated a $17 chance in the futures Golden Slipper odds at Luxbet equal with Faustus and fellow Silver Slipper Stakes rival Hussousa.

John Thompson’s Patinack Farm-owned Husson filly Hussousa also enjoyed a nice barrier assignment for Saturday with five, the Listed Gimcrack Stakes winner from the spring having resumed with a credible first-up third behind Driefontein in the Listed Widden Stakes 91100m) at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago.

Last of the non-maidens in the Silver Slipper Stakes field is then the Gerald Ryan-trained Assassinate in barrier six with Glyn Schofield engaged who debuted with an eye-catching two length win at Wyong on February 19.

There is a chance local Rosehill-based Ryan will scratch Assassinate from the Silver Slipper field, however, is the predicted heavy rain in Sydney falls and sees the track downgraded too far for Saturday.

Other notable Silver Slipper Stakes hopefuls include David Pfieffer’s unraced General Nediym colt Nediym’s Quest and the Joe Pride-trained Widden Stakes fourth placeged Brave Soul on the rails in barrier one.
