2012 Roy Higgins Quality Field Features Adelaide Cup Hopes

This Saturday as part of the exciting Australian Guineas Day program at Flemington, a quality field of staying types will face off in the $125,000 Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m), a number of which are heading towards a start in next month’s 2012 Adelaide Cup.

Due to jump at 1:20pm (VIC time) as Flemington Race 2 on Saturday, the 2012 Roy Higgins Quality has drawn a final field of nine horses, five of which also feature in the early nominations for the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 12.

Last year the Roy Higgins Quality proved an excellent Adelaide Cup betting guide for the Luxbet punters with Adelaide Cup winner Muir having run third in the Roy Higgins.

Adelaide Cup runner-up Saddler’s Story also came via a seventh in the Roy Higgins 12 months ago.

Saddler’s Story has been accepted into the Roy Higgins Quality field for this year, the Robert Smerdon-trained Xaar eight-year-old failing to have finished better than seventh since their second in the Adelaide Cup.

Smerdon, who will be represented in the $1 million Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on Saturday by his Crown Oaks winning filly Mosheen, has also paid up for Persian Star in the Roy Higgins.

Drawn ideally in barrier two with ace hoop Glen Boss in the saddle, the seven-year-old Shot Of Thunder mare continues to race competitively and was last seen finishing third behind fellow Roy Higgins rival Cheviot Beach over 2000-metres at Flemington a fortnight ago.

Saddler’s Story and Persian Star are just two of the aforementioned five Roy Higgins hopefuls heading towards the Adelaide Cup field in 2012.

The others are last-start Bendigo winner Golden Calibre, Michael Moroney’s European import Drunken Sailor last seen running second in the Mornington Cup (2400m) and the Grant Williams-trained WA mare Western Jewel.

Jeune five-year-old Western Jewel made her interstate debut last start when finishing fifth in the Mornington Cup, connections hoping she can return to her Group 2 Perth Cup winning form from last year.

Rounding out the Roy Higgins Quality field for 2012 are then Nigel Blackiston’s recent Flemington winner Cheviot Beach, the Pat Carey-trained Our Serena, genuine six-year-old stayer Prussian Officer and Robbie Lang’s Lonhro gelding Rowland coming off a second in a Moonee Valley black-type from last Friday night.
