Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Following the release of the capacity Australian Guineas field 2012 this morning bookmakers around the country have re-released their new markets on the three-year-olds’ classic to run at Melbourne’s famous Flemington Racecourse this Saturday.
As expected, despite their first-up defeat a fortnight ago, Peter Snowden’s Caulfield Guineas champ Helmet has opened top of the markets for the $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at our preferred online bookmaker Luxbet.
The brilliant Exceed And Excel colt vies for their fourth elite level title on Saturday before heading overseas to race permanently.
Not only is Helmet the sentimental favourite, they are also the deserved $3 top elect in the Australian Guineas odds at Luxbet.
Odds-on on February 18 in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1410m), Helmet was beaten two and a half lengths by That’s The One but was far from at his peak and will have come on well since them.
Adding fuel to Helmet’s claims second-up on Saturday is his ideal barrier five draw and the fact he will meet his rivals equal in the weights for the Australian Guineas.
There are just four other horses in the 16-starter, four-emergency Australian Guineas field this year under double-figures in the Luxbet markets, the next shortest-priced of which is Mosheen.
Already Robert Smerdon’s Group 1 Crown Oaks winning filly has seen a tickle of money from the punters backed in from $6.50 to $6 to salute in her second from three starts for the season.
Last seen running a nose away second in the Group 3 The Vanity (1410m) at Flemington the same day Helmet was also rolled, Mosheen has suffered an early blow for the Australian Guineas with the horror outside gate 20, into 16 if emergencies don’t gain a start.
The other single-figure chances in the Australian Guineas markets are then the Mick Price-trained Zeditave Stakes Instinction ($8 Luxbet), CS Hayes winner That’s The One ($8.50 Luxbet) and Price’s second runner Proliferate ($9 Luxbet) coming off a second to Pied A Terre in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 11.
Other longer-priced hopefuls that could prove a nice upset bet on the Australian Guineas include the likes of Peter Moody’s CS Hayes Stakes third placegetter Highly Recommended ($14 Luxbet), Danny O’Brien’s CS Hayes Stakes runner-up Decircles ($15 Luxbet), progressive Cranbourne galloper Bombalatomba ($17 Luxbet), Group 1 Futurity Stakes third placegetter from last weekend Adamantium ($17 Luxbet) and Victoria Derby winner Sangster ($51 Luxbet).
