Golden Slipper 2012 Ballot Free Ride for Silver Slipper Winner

This Saturday the latest race offering a coveted ballot exemption into Easter Saturday’s 2012 Golden Slipper field will run at Rosehill Gardens with a smart line-up of two-year-olds to face off in the $200,000 Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m).

One of three Group events on the Rosehill race program, the 2012 Silver Slipper Stakes nominations were taken on Monday with the list of 12 early entries published right here at

As always, this year’s edition of the Silver Slipper is shaping up as a supercharged showdown with the winner earning an automatic spot in the world’s richest juvenile’s race, the $3.5 million Group 1 AAMI Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 7.

The Silver Slipper Stakes is also an excellent early Golden Slipper betting guide for Luxbet punters.

While last year’s Silver Slipper Stakes winner Satin Shoes only managed to finish ninth behind Darley-owned superstar Sepoy in the Golden Slipper, the filly that finished runner-up in the Silver Slipper was subsequent Golden Slipper third placegetter Elite Falls.

The latest 2012 Golden Slipper odds at our preferred online bookie Luxbet are clearly led by Mick Price’s ace filly Samaready.

Emphatic three length winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield last Saturday, the undefeated daughter of More Than Ready pays $4.40 through Luxbet to emulate Sepoy in securing the prized but rare Blue Diamond – Golden Slipper double.

While the three top-name Golden Slipper chances are absent from the Silver Slipper entries, the shortest-priced of Saturday’s hopefuls in the Luxbet Golden Slipper futures is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pierro.

Rated a $13 chance to hand Waterhouse her fourth Golden Slipper winner, Lonhro colt Pierro hasn’t been seen since his close win over Hidden Warrior on debut in the Listed Thoroughbred Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick last October.

Three other Silver Slipper nominations are under $20 in the current Golden Slipper odds at Luxbet with Peter Snowden’s Rosehill winner Meidung, the John O’Shea-trained More Than Ready colt Faustus and John Thompson’s smart Husson filly Hussousa all on $17.

Winner of the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick in October, Hussousa resumed on February 18 with an eye-catching third behind Waterhouse’s Magic Millions Classic winner Driefontein in the Listed Widden Stakes (1100m) at Warwick Farm.

“I was not worried about her Widden run because she went into it a bit fat,” Thompson said.

“We are looking at a race in six weeks (the Golden Slipper), and she will improve with every run.”

Hussousa will be ridden by Hugh Bowman on Saturday in the Silver Slipper after the previously booked Blake Shinn was suspended at Caulfield on Blue Diamond Stakes Day.

“She’s a Slipper horse and there is still a fair bit of improvement left in her,” Thompson said quoting the words of trackwork rider Jason Lee.

Faustus, meanwhile, hasn’t been seen since their first-up win at Rosehill last November when they defeated Kuchinskaya by a neck in their maiden race appearance over 1100-metres.

They trialled at Rosehill on February 21 running second over 900-metres with Jim Cassidy in the saddle, Cassidy to ride him again on Saturday.

“He went disgraceful in his trial on the wet track,” O’Shea said.

“He has come back a strong, bigger horse and it was the right decision to miss the Magic Millions with him with an eye to the Slipper.

“Jimmy is putting it (the trial loss) down to the wet track, so we want it dry for him.”

Other notable Silver Slipper Stakes nominees and their Golden Slipper price include Gerald Ryan’s recent Wyong winner Assassinate and the unraced Nediym’s Quest paying $19.

Trainer David Pfieffer is hoping for a strong first-up showing from General Nediym colt Nediym’s Quest after they blitzed both of their Sydney trials this month.

“There is no hiding, and if he is going to be a Golden Slipper horse he is going to have to take these horses on sometime,” Pfieffer said.

“This is the best horse I’ve ever worked and the horse who can put me in the spotlight.

“I’ve never had a two-year-old Group runner so that’s a first.

“He’s going to be up against rock-hard opposition.

“It’s not easy but I think he’s a quality horse.”
