Adelaide Cup 2012 Nominations & Weights

Late last week the early nominations and weights for the highly-anticipated 2012 Adelaide Cup at Morphettville next month were released with 41 stayers nominated for the popular two-mile showdown.

Norsqui is one of the top-rated and weighted 2012 Adelaide Cup noiminations

One of only five stakes events on the Australian racing calendar held each year over the traditional 3200-metres cup distance, the most notable of which is of course the spring’s Melbourne Cup, the  $400,000 Group 3 Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup is set to light up Morphettville Racecourse on Monday March 12.

Last year’s Adelaide Cup winner Muir came via a third in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) at Flemington, a race that is set to run this Saturday on Australian Guineas Day and which could be a good one to watch for Luxbet punters wanting an early Adelaide Cup betting guide.

Another upcoming clash to keep an eye on when seeking the best value in the Adelaide Cup odds once released is tomorrow night’s $225,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) in Tasmania where Adelaide Cup nominees including Fieldmaster and Viking Hero will face off.

There are plenty of talented gallopers among the 2012 Adelaide Cup nominations including the 59.5kg topweight Drunken Sailor.

A stablemate of Viking Hero and one of four Adelaide Cup entries for trainer Michael Moroney, the European import was last seen running second to Norsqui in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) on February 15 with 60kg on their back.

Mornington Cup winner Norsqui from the stables of Walter McShane also features in the Adelaide Cup entries as the third heaviest-weighted horse on 56kg.

Titch is the second with 57.5kg, Kevin Myers’ veteran seven-year-old New Zealander last seen winning the Wairo Cup (2100m) back home.

Myers has also nominated his seven-year-old Jahalfil gelding Crocodile Canyon for the Adelaide Cup.

Meanwhile fellow Kiwi horseman Shaune Ritchie, now based in Sydney, could be represented in the race by his Group performing Montjeu six-year-old Roi D’Jeu who is a scratching from Wednesday’s Launceston Cup field.

Other more notable Adelaide Cup nominations high up the current order of entry include Peter Moody’s in-form Encosta De Lago gelding Hanks who won the Listed Moonee Valley Night Cup (2500m) last Friday, the David Hayes-trained Bago Handicap winner Unchain My Heart, Tony Vasil’s Werribee Cup champ Apprehend and Western Jewel.

Grant Williams’ smart Perth-trained mare Western Jewel was the commanding two length winner of last year’s Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) at home earning herself an interstate trip.

The Jeune five-year-old made her Melbourne debut in the Mornington Cup running a credible fifth and is nominated to race again this Saturday in the aforementioned $125,000 Listed Roy Higgins quality (2600m) at Flemington.
