Peter Young Stakes 2012 Winner Is Lucas Cranach – Race 8 Results

Lucas Cranach

Lucas Cranach wins the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield

Lucas Cranach has built upon his Melbourne Cup placing to win the 2012 Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse today.

The five-year-old entire demonstrated his impressive finishing ability as he sprinted home down the final straight.

It was the third race start in Australia for Lucas Cranach, who was purchased from Germany prior to the spring last year.

Lucas Cranach finished fifth in the Caulfield Cup first-up before placing third in the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup.

Trainer Anthony Freedman was impressed with Lucas Cranach’s winning performance in the 2012 Peter Young Stakes, which was previously known as the St George Stakes.

“It’s good to see the horse produce that turn of foot that we know it has,” Freedman said.

“You’re looking at horses winning in Germany, it’s very hard to assess.

“But he kept running good sectionals and good sectionals can take you anywhere in the world.”

Lucas Cranach will now go head to head against Americain in the Group 1 Australian Cup on March 10, 2012, at Flemington racecourse.

“It was a very impressive win and we’ll head to Flemington with a bit of confidence,” Freedman said.

“You don’t know that they’re weight for age horses until they do it.”

Nash Rawiller was the jockey to steer Lucas Cranach to today’s 2012 Peter Young Stakes win.

“He switched off beautifully and I was pretty fortunate who’s back I was able to get onto,” Rawiller said.

“He just sort of pricked his ears 50 (metres) out.

“His form’s outstanding.

“I’m very excited about getting the opportunity to get the ride on him.”
