King Mufhasa

King Mufhasa wins the Group 1 Futurity Stakes

King Mufhasa has used his top fitness to win the Group 1 Futurity Stakesat Caulfield Racecourse today February 25, 2012.

The seven-year-old proved too good for the remainder of the field, dictating the pace from the very beginning.

King Mufhasa won the 2012 Futurity Stakes in front of second place-getter Pinker Pinker and third place-getter Andamantium.

New Zealand trainer Stephen Mckee was pleased that the Pentire gelding was able to win his first start in Australia since claiming victory in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap last spring.

“(It’s) good to see him go back to back,” Mckee said.

“He’s always run against Group 1 level too for the majority of his career.

“Nash (Rawiller) was able to dictate the race and we know how good Nash is out the front.

“These big days in Australia, it pays to put an Australian jockey on.”

While he was obviously glad he didn’t have to run second to Black Caviar, Mckee said he had been thrilled at the thought of having the opportunity to run against her before she did not accept for today’s race.

“I was actually quite excited to run against her. I don’t think a kiwi horse has,” he said.

King Mufhasa will now go on to run in the George Ryder Stakes or the All Aged Stakes later in the autumn carnival.

“(We) might look at the George Ryder or the all aged or both,” Mckee said.

Jockey Nash Rawiller was thrilled with the result.

“He’s an old cracker isn’t he?” Rawiller said.

“He’s probably not the best horse I’ve ever ridden but the stats show he’s one of the hardest tryer (sic).

“I was actually very confident but I think I could hear Pinker Pinker coming late.

“He’s a true professional… and he makes his own luck.”
