Raceway Wins 2012 Canonbury Stakes – Warwick Farm Results

Raceway has narrowly won the 2012 Canonbury Stakes at Warwick Farm today February 18, 2012.

The two-year-old won the race, despite a gallant challenge from second place-getter Shelford.

Raceway

Raceway wins 2012 Canonbury Stakes on his way to 2012 Golden Slipper.

Raceway settled a length off the leader before moving up the outside at the 600 metre mark to snare the lead before powering down the final straight.

Star Thoroughbreds owner Denise Martin thinks the best is still to come for Raceway.

“I think he’s just a lovely two year old and the further he goes in his preparation, the better he’ll be,” Martin said.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse felt that despite the small margin, the win was a strong one.

“Unbelievably dominant,” Waterhouse said.

“He was never going to be beaten.”

Waterhouse feels today’s result puts Raceway in good stead for his Golden Slipper run on April 7, 2012.

“The horses that are racing here today will be racing in a months’ time,” she said.

“I’m not going to give him any runs. I’m going to let things fall into place.

“He’s a very exciting horse.”

Jockey Hugh Bowman rode Raceway to today’s 2012 Canonbury Stakes victory.

“He just oozes past the horses,” Bowman said.

“I could have led and he would have won but I just thought I’d take a sit.

“He just made his own luck.

“He’s got plenty of upside.”

When asked about Raceway’s obvious unbalanced moment on the turn for home, Bowman was unfazed.

“I wouldn’t be too worried about that,” he said.
