Black Caviar Outclasses Hay List Once Again To Win Lightning Stakes 2012

News - Autumn Racing - Race Results
18 February 2012
Black Caviar

Black Caviar wins the 2012 Lightning Stakes at Flemington, making it 19 from 19

Black Caviar has shown her ability to complete a short back-up by winning the 2012 Lightning Stakesat Flemington Racecourse today.

The mighty five-year-old out-sprinted her rivals, including the talented Hay List, as she surged towards her 19th straight race victory.

Black Caviar paid larger than usual odds of $1.12 at Luxbet due to her coming back in distance to 1,000 metres after winning the 1,400 metre CF Orr Stakes last Saturday.

It was the first time she ever looked to have been tested, with Black Caviar winning the 2012 Lightning Stakes by a margin of 1.75 lengths ahead of Hay List, who finished second.

Buffering held on to finish home in third in a photo with Foxwedge.

Hay List’s part owner Terry Davenport acknowledged there would be no excuses for Hay List in the 2012 Lightning Stakes.

“There will be no excuses, he’s pretty much as well as he can be,” he said.

Peter Moody was at his most confident prior to the race.

“Happy horse, happy trainer,” Moody said.

“I’ve got great respect for the opposition, but she’s something defferent isn’t she.

“She’s never looked vulnerable on the straight.”

Moody was over the moon with the result post-race.

“Anytime she’s been up for a fight and he’s the only horse that ever made her fight,” Moody said.

“She was never going to show the turn of foot that she had first up last year in this sort of race.

“We had the best horse in the race, we were going to take it to them.

“Certainly wasn’t her most dominant win but it was probably the closest she’s been to a course record.”

Moody had planned to send Black Caviar to the 2012 Lightning takes since late last year.

“She loves the straight. I flagged it in December, so it’s always been in the back of my mind.”

This latest win has taken Black Caviar’s prize money to an unbelievable $5.1 million.

Black Caviar’s next race may not be the Futurity Stakes next weekend, with Peter Moody suggesting she might have run her final race in Australia this preparation.

“I could pretty much that she won’t be there next week,” Moody said.

“For her to be there next Saturday she probabaly would have had to have it softer today.

“If she goes to Dubai she’s probably run her last race in Australia this prep.

“If she doesn’t get to Dubai we’ll look into what leads her into Ascot.”

Luke Nolen was full of emotion after the race was run.

“If she had have been set for (the Lightning Stakes) it would have been a different story,” Nolen said.

“(It’s the) first time in her life she’s ever backed up.

“She really toughed it out. She touched me today.

“The chips were down and she showed a lot of courage.

“She fought it out.

“(Hay List) had me worried for a couple of strides.”
