The 2012 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival action kicks up a gear this Saturday, February 18, with a crack eight-race program to host the resuming and next-up runs of many of the major players for the upcoming elite level features.
Warwick Farm racing commences at 1:10pm (NSW time) and is headlined by three Group race showdowns as well as a double shot of Listed race action.
The opening black-type is set to jump as Warwick Farm Race 2 at 1:50pm – the $100,000 Listed Tom Cassar Widden Stakes (1100m) where Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper 2012 fancy Driefontein will be out to maintain her undefeated status.
In the next – Warwick Farm Race 3 the $100,000 Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) – Waterhouse will then saddle up the Luxbet Golden Slipper favourite Raceway.
Group racing then gets underway at 3:50pm with Race 5 – the $175,000 Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m).
The field for the fifth is down to 11 quality mares, the Luxbet top elect of which is Peter Snowden’s always-consistent Group 1 performer Beaded.
The Races.com.au team’s Warwick Farm Race of the Day, however, is the $175,000 Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at 4:30pm.
This is a star-studded showdown featuring many of the most promising and convincing three-year-old colts and geldings getting around.
Punters will find it hard to pick their Royal Sovereign Stakes favourites with so many gallopers out with plenty to prove including WA raider King Saul, Spring Champion Stakes winner Doctor Doom and the Peter Snowden-trained duo of Free Wheeling and Ambidexter.
The dominant duo are, however, resuming Golden Rose winner Manawanui who leads the Luxbet odds over Peter Moody’s untapped and unbeaten gelding Moment Of Change.
The last of the Group events will then run as Race 7 at 5:10pm with a similarly impressive field of fillies engaged for the $175,000 Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).
Favourite at Luxbet for the Light Fingers Stakes this year is Guy Walter’s Flight Stakes winner Streama, but first-up she could be vulnerable opening it up for the likes of Karuta Queen, Pane In The Glass and Schiffer to strike.
