Tasty Black Caviar Horse Odds – Lightning Stakes 2012 Betting

Punters will get the chance to back the mighty Black Caviar at her longest-price in over 12 months of racing as the threat of racing on successive Saturdays, dropping back in distance and meeting arch-opponent Hay List at his peak has seen the bookies install her at a generous price in the 2012 Lightning Stakes odds.

Black Caviar

Black Caviar pays a 'generous' $1.10 to win the 2012 Lightning Stakes at Flemington this Saturday

Back one year later after easily accounting for the hulking Hay List by three and a half lengths in the Flemington feature first-up last year, Peter Moody’s superlative sprinter Black Caviar is “95 percent” certain to vie for back-to-back wins in the $750,000 Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) this Saturday.

“We’re pretty excited about lining up on Saturday now, I’d say we’re about 95 per cent (certain to run),” Black Caviar’s part-owner Neil Werrett said.

Surprisingly Black Caviar has opened at a price of $1.10 in the Luxbet Lightning Stakes odds, a far juicer price than she was at last weekend when going to the 1400-metres for the first time.

The $1.04 favourite at Caulfield, Black Caviar displayed her customary calmness to cruise to an easy win over Southern Speed in the CF Orr Stakes.

She faces a different kind of challenge, however, in the Lightning Stakes 2012.

Not only will the queen by shooting to equal the Australasian record of 19-straight victories, she will be doing it on a seven-day back-up, something Moody has never asked his stable ace to do before.

A win on Saturday will further cement Black Caviar’s name in the history books as she will also be dropping back from her 1400-metre canter in the CF Orr to a fast-paced clash down the straight for the 1000-metre Lightning Stakes.

The next shortest priced of nine hopeful horses engaged in the 2012 Coolmore Lightning Stakes field for Saturday is of course the resuming Hay List at $9 through Luxbet.

John McNair’s gallant galloper goes to the races for the first time since his second to Black Caviar in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben back in May, which was also the last time punters could find Black Caviar at $1.10 or better in the betting.

Since then Black Caviar has gone on to win six more races including two Group 1’s while Hay List has been recovering from an infection that nearly ended his career and his life.

After plenty of work Hay List is back and ready to go, finally meeting Black Caviar on what looks like equal terms.

One person confident Black Caviar’s old sparring partner Hay List will be the horse to stretch her is the challenger’s jockey Glyn Schofield.

Schofield turned down a plum ride on returning Golden Rose winner Manawanui in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday to be on Hay List’s back when he takes on Black Caviar for the fifth time.

“I’m not going to be worried or be intimidated by Black Caviar in any way,” he said.

“Obviously, you have to be respectful of Black Caviar but not just her – I’m also respectful of the other runners in the race.

“But I’ll be out there to ride my horse the best I can, give him every chance to win.

“If he is good enough to win, then he will.

“If he doesn’t he will still run a very good race.

“Hay List still has to come back off his long break and perform to a high level, but I’m confident he will.

“He’s ready as he could be to win first-up.

“He feels great, his work has been super and he is ready to go.”

John O’Shea’s smart three-year-old Foxwedge at $14 is the only other horse in the Lightning Stakes odds under $51, early money coming in for the colt after they opened at $17 through Luxbet.
