2012 Golden Slipper-Bound Driefontein Heads Widden Stakes Field

Gai Waterhouse’s Magic Millions Classic winner Driefontein will have her final lead-up run before the lucrative Golden Slipper 2012 in this Saturday’s Widden Stakes at Warwick Farm.

Driefontein races in the 2012 Widden Stakes this Saturday on way to the Golden Slipper

The Fastnet Rock filly has already amassed close to $1.3 million in her three-start career to date and will be out to maintain her flawless record in the $100,000 Tom Cassar Widden Stakes (1100m).

Due to jump as Warwick Farm Race 2 at 1:50pm, the 2012 Widden Stakes field features just seven two-year-old fillies.

Driefontein is the obvious pick to get behind at Luxbet, especially after she came up trumps with the inside alley.

After a three length Randwick win on debut back in November, Driefontein saluted in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes at Doomben in December in her first look at the 1200-metres.

She was then handed the Magic Millions Classic victory at the Gold Coast on January 14 after winning a protest against her stablemate No Looking Back.

Driefontien’s grand final autumn aim is the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on April 7.

Futures Golden Slipper odds at Luxbet are led by her stablemate Raceway, who also runs at the Farm on Saturday in the $100,000 Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m), at a quote of $6.

Driefontein is one of the $13 third favourites, along with No Looking Back and the fellow Waterhouse-trained Pierro, a price that could firm should she salute on Saturday.

The main danger to Driefontein in the Widden Stakes 2012 will come from barrier three, John Thompson’s resuming Gimcrack Stakes winner Hussousa.

The Husson filly showed she was ready to get back to race conditions with a smart barrier trial win over 855m at Randwick last month, Hussousa looking to win her second stakes race after taking out the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut back in October.

Other notable Widden Stakes hopefuls include the Anthony Cummings-trained Agueda in barrier two and coming off a win at Gosford, and Peter Snowden’s unraced Exceed And Excel filly Incrimination in the far outside gate seven for their debut.

If you are signing up and depositing with Luxbet for the first time, we recommended depositing $400 and quoting the code BONUSBET to get back the full $400 in a bonus bet!
