Newmarket Handicap 2012 Hopes Nominated for Breeders Classic

This Saturday a field bursting with Group performing mares will take to Warwick Farm Racecourse for the mares-only Breeders Classic, a race being used by a number of gallopers as a lead-up to the 2012 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington next month.

Doomben 10,000 winner Beaded resumes racing in the 2012 Breeders Classic this Saturday

The $175,000 Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) attracted 18 early entries at nomination stage, the event won 12 months ago by Gai Waterhouse’s brilliant More Joyous.

Waterhouse has just one nominee as she attempts back-to-back Breeders Classic wins with Montana Flyer who hasn’t raced since her fourth to Yosei in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm last June.

The top-rated of the Breeders Classic hopes this year is the Peter Snowden-trained Beaded.

Over her 22 career start to date Lonhro six-year-old Beaded has amassed over $1.5 million in prize money, the champ having finished out of the top on just one occasion.

Beaded has raced against the highest caliber rivals her entire career contesting eight Group 1 races, but her sole elite level victory to date was in last year’s Doomben 10,000.

She too was last seen running in the Tattersall’s Tiara when she came within a nose of success after being blocked for a run, that performance following her similarly close second to Sincero in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Beaded is the shortest-priced of the Breeders Classic hopefuls in the future 2012 Newmarket Handicap odds at Luxbet paying $17 to take out the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival feature on March 10.

Other notable players featuring in the Breeders Classic entries include the Chris Waller-trained duo of Epsom Handicap third placegetter Red Tracer and Flying Spur six-year-old Vintedge, Liam Birchley’s consistent General Nediym mare Paprika and the Joe Pride-trained Ladys Angel.

The Breeders Classic runs as one of three Group race features at Warwick Farm this Saturday, final fields for which are due for release on Wednesday.
