2012 Mornington Cup Field & Odds

An impressive field of quality stayers from around the country has been accepted into the Mornignton Cup 2012 field, the lucrative Victorian feature to take place this Wednesday, February 15.

Sea Galleon

Sea Galleon is one of the 2012 Mornignton Cup hopes vying for the Caulfield Cup ballot exemption

Due to jump at 4:00pm (VIC time) as Mornington Race 8, the $300,000 Listed Mornignton Cup (2400m) is a crucial autumn event as it offers a 2012 Caulfield Cup ballot exemption to the winner.

Overwhelming favourite in the 2012 Mornignton Cup odds at Luxbet is Power O’Raylee, Peter Moody’s exciting O’Reilly mare coming off an incredible six-straight winning streak.

Having claimed victory at every metro track in Victoria from Mornignton to Caulfield, Sandown to Flemington, the four-year-old was last seen putting an easy four lengths on her rivals over 2040m at Moonee Valley on January 27.

Drawn on the rails with regular rider Luke Nolen engaged, Power O’Raylee is certainly deserving of her spot at the top of the markets as she has the record, form, draw, jockey and the ideal weight dropping back from 57.5kg last start to just 54kg on Wednesday.

Only one of Power O’Raylee’s 13 rivals are also at single figures in the Mornignton Cup betting at Luxbet, with the consistent Sea Galleon paying $8.

Colin & Cindy Alderson’s smart Galileo five-year-old enjoyed three straight wins including in the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) over November – December before their disappointing last-start sixth in the Victoria Cup (2000m) at Caulfield on February 4.

Sea Galleon has also come up trumps in the Mornington Cup barriers drawing gate three with Ben Melham to ride them on the minimum (54kg).

The early Mornington Cup market mover in from $12 to $10 through Luxbet is Perth Cup winner Western Jewel.

Drawn awkwardly in barrier 13 for Wednesday with ace hoop Craig Williams in the mount, the Jeune mare was the emphatic winner of the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Eve and was last seen finishing second over 1600m at Ascot in her first-up run on February 4.

“She drew wide in the Perth Cup (barrier 14 of 16) and won that so hopefully she can do the same here,” trainer Grant Williams said.

Williams is hoping jockey Craig Williams will make himself available to ride Western Jewel throughout the autumn with her main aim being the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 12.

“It would be nice if we could keep him on and hopefully she runs well enough,” Williams said.

If successful, Western Jewel will be handing WA back-to-back Mornington Cup victories following the success of the Lou Luciani-trained Perth raider Guyno 12 months ago.

Western Jewel’s prominent owner Bob Peters is especially keen for the mare to salute on Wednesday and earn a ballot-free ride into the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) in the spring on October 21.

Peters owned the 1989 Caulfield Cup runner-up Congressman, who lost to Imposera, and he hopes Western Jewel will be able to go one better than that horse from 23 years ago.

Other notable Mornignton Cup 2012 horses include the Tony Vasil-trained Werribee Cup champ Apprehend ($10 Luxbet), David Hayes’ last-start Bagot Handicap winner over 2800m at Flemington Unchain My Heart ($11 Luxbet) and Bianconi five-year-old Royal Mail ($12 Luxbet).

Another stakes-winner vying for the Mornington Cup victory on Wednesday is Drunken Sailor, the now Michael Moroney-trained import the 60kg topweight paying $16 through Luxbet to overcome the hefty allocation.
