After their impressive race debut for new trainer Peter Moody at Caulfield over the weekend, imported galloper Manighar has firmed dramatically in the futures markets for their major autumn aim, the Australian Cup 2012 at Flemington on March 3.
Formerly prepared in Europe by Luca Cumani, Linamix six-year-old Manighar stayed on in Australia following their strong spring down under with Peter Moody now in charge of the stayer’s career until they are retired.
During the spring Manighar caught the eye with impressive runs including their fourth in the Caulfield Cup, fifth in the Melbourne Cup and second to current 2012 Australian Cup Luxbet favourite Americain in the Zipping Classic at Sandown on November 12.
Debuting for Moody and racing for the first time in three months, there was no stopping Manighar on Saturday as they raced away to an easy one and three quarter length victory over Shadowfax in the Group 3 T.S. Carlyon Cup (1600m).
The grey, who had never raced over shorter than 2400m in their 22-start before Saturday, caught the eye with their beautiful mile win but will step up in distance again in their next two runs.
“Four weeks ago he was a 4000 metres hurdler with all due respect, but as we shortened and sharpened his work over the last couple of weeks, he started to show a turn of foot,” Moody said.
“I thought it would not be silly to run him in a mile first up.”
Prior to their first-up success Manighar was rated only a $26 chance in the Luxbet futures for the $1 million Group 1 Dubai Australian Cup (2000m).
While Americain continues to top the Australian Cup odds at a quote of $4.20 through Luxbet, Manighar has been the major market mover firming right into $9.
Another Australian Cup market mover over the weekend was Southern Speed, the reigning Caulfield Cup winner firming in from $9 to $7 second favourite after her brave second behind the mighty Black Caviar in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
“We’ll decide if he needs another run before the Australian Cup but he’s going well,” Modoy said.
Following the Australian Cup, Manighar will then step-up to 2400m for the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW at Rosehill Gardens on Golden Slipper Day, April 7.
