Geegees Blackflash Wins Hobart Cup 2012 – Results

While all eyes were on Black Caviar in Melbourne on Saturday, Sunday saw another ‘Black Flash’ score a victory with Geegees Blackflash saluting as the punters’ pick in the 2012 Hobart Cup during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.

The John Luttrell-trained Clangalang five-year-old remains unbeaten since November winning their past five straight after their sensational three-quarter length victory in the $225,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart Cup (2200m) over the weekend.

After thrashing a quality field by a minimum six lengths carting 60kg in the Summer Cup (2100m) on January 22, Geegees Blackflash backed up with another genuine staying performance to hand prominent owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard with their latest black-type prize.

Enjoying the drop back to 58.5kg with the Melbourne-based Peter Mertens aboard once again, Geegees Blackflash ($3.10F) ran a strong 2200m to beat home Michael Moroney’s Victorian raider Viking Hero ($7.10) while the Troy Blacker-trained Dream Flyer ($7.70) finished just a nose further back to finish off the Hobart Cup Trifecta.

It was the heaviest weight carried by a Hobart Cup winner since 1972 Doomben Cup hero Knee High took out the 1974 edition with a hefty 59.5kg on their back.

Going into the Hobart Cup a favourite and emerging a champion, Geegees Blackflash enjoyed a beautiful mid-field run enjoying the slower pace set by early leader Jay Bee’s Gee Gee who faded to finish ninth, before they displayed a devastating turn of foot to hit the front at the top of the straight and race away to victory.

“I don’t know what to say,” Luttrell said post-Hobart Cup win.

“This horse is my mate and he is the reason I kept training when I was about to give it all away.

“There’s not much I can say except the horse is just an outstanding animal that loves doing what he does and I just have to make sure he keeps fit and healthy.

“I knew how good he was and he’s brought it out and done it again today.

“He’s kept doing it week in week out.

“I love him to death.”

Not only was Sunday the first time a local had won the Hobart Cup since our Dashing Dane in 2005, but Geegees Blackflash was also only the second Tasmanian-trained favourite in history to win the race joining Brorama Star ($4.50 in 2001).

It was a huge improvement by Geegees Blackflash from their 11th to Bid Spotter in last year’s Hobart Cup, and they look right on track to score the Tassie Summer Cups double for 2012.

After their Hobart Cup run 12 months ago Geegees Blackflash went on to finish just half a length away third to Fast Future in the Launceston Cup.

The $225,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) on February 29 is on the agenda for Geegees Blackflash again and they are almost sure to start the short-priced favourite at Luxbet after their winning performance on Sunday.

“He’ll go to the Launceston Cup now as long as the handicapper only gives hima  kilogram or so penalty and then he’ll go to the paddock,” Luttrell confirmed.

Stay tuned to over the coming weeks for all the latest Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival news and betting updates.
