General Rippa Wins 2012 Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) – Results

General Rippa has won the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) at Caulfield Racecourse today February 11, 2012.

The General Nediym gelding won the race by a long neck ahead of Rusambo, who placed second, and Ferment, who ran home for third.

Trainer David Hayes will now be looking to win his sixth Blue Diamond Stakes on February 25, 2012, with the gelding.

Hayes was impressed with General Rippa’s winning performance.

“The timing was just right I think,” Hayes said.

“I love seeing these young horses come from last and finish powerfully.”

It was the first career start for General Rippa, who did not make an appearance during the Melbourne spring carnival last year.

“If there were a lot more races in the spring, we’d run them,” Hayes said.

The trainer was confident of General Rippa’s chances going into today’s 2012 Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) and feels that the two-year-old’s racing style will serve him well in the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes.

“We though he was pretty good that’s why we put him in the race,” he said.

“I like the racing pattern for the Blue Diamond, it’s a high pressure race”

Jockey Damien Oliver took the ride aboard General Rippa, despite have no real knowledge about the horse’s background or chances in the race.

“David said he trailed up okay,” Oliver said.

While General Rippa displayed himself as a bit green, Oliver believes he is in with a good chance come the 2012 Blue Diamond Stakes later this month.

“He didn’t know much early, (but) he took a nice gap there in the straight,” the jockey said.

“He’s still pretty raw, he’s a long way from learning what it’s all about.

“His style of racing won’t hurt him (in the Blue Diamond Stakes).”
