Ranger Leads Carlyon Cup Odds & Betting

Exciting Perth galloper Ranger is the firming favourite to win their intestate debut in this Saturday’s Carlyon Cup at Caulfield ahead of their main Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival goal, the 2012 Australian Cup at Flemington next month.

The Grant Williams-trained Testa Rossa five-year-old is the shortest-priced and one of the best-backed of the now 14 – #12 Rebel Soldier an early scratching – stayers engaged for Caulfield Race 4 tomorrow, the $1250,000 Group 3 Carylon Cup (1600m).

Last seen running third in the Group 2 C.B. Cox Stakes (2100m) at Ascot on December 17, which came one run after their gallant second to Playing God in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), Ranger has firmed in from $4.20 to $4 in the 2012 Carlyon Cup odds at Luxbet over the past 24 hours.

Connections made the decision to bring the consistent Ranger to Victoria to target the $1 million Group 1 Dubai Australian Cup (2000m) on March 10, a race on the agenda for a number of their Carlyon Cup rivals.

Ranger is out on Saturday to emulate the great Fred Kersley-trained Northerly, the most famous racehorse in history to come out of WA.

After their opening seven career starts at Ascot during 2000 Northerly traveled to Melbourne in the autumn of 2001 and took out the Carlyon Cup, when it was a Group 2 event, in their interstate debut.

They backed up with a third to Greenstone Charm in the Victoria Cup on March 3 that year and then scored a devastating three and a quarter length victory over Hit The Roof in the 2001 Australian Cup as a $6 chance.

Northerly went on to become a true turf genius going on to win a plethora of other Group 1 races including back-to-back editions of the Cox Plate in 2001 and 2002.

He still sits third on the list of highest-earning Australian thoroughbreds in history with $9,341,850 trailing only the mighty Sunline ($11,351,607) and triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva ($14,526,685).

In an interesting sidenote, Ranger’s owners Bob and Sandra Peters also owned Old Comrade who claimed an upset win over Northerly in the 2002 Australian Cup; Northerly went on to win his second Australian Cup the next year (2003).

One thing Ranger will have to work hard to overcome if they, and jockey Craig Williams, are to salute for the punters is the extreme outside draw.

“The barrier hasn’t helped us but he’s a get-back runner anyway so the barrier is not too much of a worry as he can go back and get into it late,” trainer Grant Williams said.

“If the real horse turns up I think he has the ability to win.”

Following Ranger in the Carlyon Cup betting this year are three other runners currently at single-figures to win through Luxbet with:

The Peter Moody-trained Shout Out Loud ($7) who comes off a good second to reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed in the Listed John Dillon Stakes (1400m) on January 26

Mick Price’s six-year-old Ekraar mare Vivid Vixen ($8) who resumed from a lengthy nine month spell to finish 10th in the John Dillon

The Mark Kavanagh-trained Daggers Drawn gelding Shadowfax ($8.50) coming off a close fourth, beaten only a length in the John Dillon, also a four length winner over the track and distance here last May in Slow conditions

Longer-priced hopefuls that have been gaining lots of early support making them the Luxbet market movers are then the David Hayes-trained resuming seven-year-old Largo Lad ($21 into $17) and former European galloper and Melbourne Cup performer Manighar ($16 into $10).
