2012 Blue Diamond Favourite Malasun Back Up for Bonus

A change of heart from trainer Mick Price has kept current Blue Diamond Stakes 2012 favourite Malasun in the running for Patinack Farm’s lucrative $1 million Blue Diamond Triple Crown bonus as she will now go into this Saturday’s Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude at Caulfield.

Currently sitting at the top of the Luxbet odds for the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), Melbourne’s prestigious juvenile’s feature to run at Caulfield on February 25, nicely-bred Red Ransom filly Malasun pays $6.

She has had just the one run to date when winning the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on January 26.

Originally Price said he would not vie for the three-race Blue Diamond Series bonus with the $80,000 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale purchase, and would bypass this Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) over 1100m.

With Malausn coming through her debut run in brilliant fashion, Price has rearranged her program and she will now look to make it two-from-two this weekend.

“She was a little green when she raced in the Preview and with four weeks and two days between the Preview and the Blue Diamond I just thought it might be too long,” Price said.

“She’s done really well.

“I could have galloped her on Saturday, but I’m saving that gallop for Tuesday and run her Saturday.

“I take a punt if I do run her and take a punt if I don’t, but after looking again at the replay of her Caulfield win, she’s still learning her craft and it just seems the best option to let her have that race experience.

“She won well on debut, but it was the first time she’d been in among horses and she was a bit green and then she hit the front, she was mentally off and on, so I’m thinking that another run could do her the world of good with mind to the big one two weeks later.”

Price has also nominated his unbeaten More Than Ready filly Samaready for Saturday’ BD Preview, the December 17 winner at Flemington on debut currently paying $10 in the Blue Diamond markets at Luxbet, along with the unraced Tuscan Haze.

“She was on the way down when she won, but she is thriving,” Price said of Samaready.

“I think I’ll get two good runs out of her.”

It is shaping up as a genuine Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude this year with other ace entries – along with their current 2012 Blue Diamond Stakes price – including Peter Snowden’s resuming Melbourne Cup Day winner Applegate ($9 Luxbet), Blue Diamond Preview runner-up Members Joy ($15 Luxbet) and third placegetter Sabie ($21 Luxbet), and Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Real Stolle ($18 Luxbet) representing Patinack Farm.

Diamond Earth, who is not currently entered for the Blue Diamond Stakes, adds even more interest to the fillies-only clash.

The Anthony Cummings-trained Choisir filly won two of her three opening starts before going down a long-neck to Cavalry Rose in the Inglis Classic (1200m) at Rosehill on January 21.

Also among the entries is Saturday’s Queen Adelaide Stakes winner over 1050m at Morphettville, the Anthony Freedman-trained Armed For Action.

The Blue Diamond Prelude for Fillies is one of eight black-types running at Caulfield this weekend, the action headlined by Black Caviar racing in the year’s opening elite level, the $400,000 Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m).

Also on the bumper Caulfield race card is the $125,000 Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts & Geldings), which drew 12 nominations.
