Bel Sprinter Heads 2012 WJ Adams Stakes Field

News - Autumn Racing - Betting - Race Previews
1 February 2012

Jason Warren’s aptly named sprinter Bel Sprinter will look to continue their stunningly consistent career strike rate this Saturday when they race first-up in the W.J. Adams Stakes 2012 at Caulfield, the event registered this time round as the United Arab Emirates Stakes.

Bel Sprinter seeks their fifth win from six starts at Caulfield this Saturday

Due to jump at 4:30pm (VIC time) as Caulfield Race 6, the $100,000 United Arab Emirates WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) field features 10 class horses this year.

Half of the field race for the first time in 2012, including sure to be favourite in the Luxbet markets Bel Sprinter.

Drawn midfield in barrier five with Ben Melham booked for the ride, four-year-old Bel Sprinter shares the same sire as Australia’s best horse Black Caviar, Bel Esprit.

They kicked off their career in the best possible fashion winning their opening four career starts including a Listed 1200m race at Caulfield by an impressive three lengths in August.

Their undefeated streak came to an end last start, however, when Bel Sprinter went down a quarter length to Lone Rock in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis (1200m) at Flemington on September 3.

How they come back and perform on Saturday will determine what path Warren takes Bel Sprinter down this autumn, the $350,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 25 and the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 10 both shaping up as attractive options for the progressive runner.

“He’s nominated for the Newmarket but the Oakleigh Plate would also be a good race for him,” Warren said.

“We will make a decision after Saturday and see where we end up but he won’t run in both.”

Although fresh, Warren said Bel Sprinter had come through their spell well and was rearing to go for Saturday.

“He is pretty much on song,” Warren said.

“He has strengthened up a bit so I imagine he has improved a bit.”

Other notable first-up runners in the WJ Admas on Saturday include the Mark Kavanagh-trained Group 1 tried Definitely Ready, Peter Moody’s stakes winning mare Kulgrinda and former Gold Coast galloper Faster Son who makes their race debut for new trainer Mick Price.

Meanwhile Matthew Dale’s smart Not A Single Doubt four-year-old Unanimously will seek back-to-back wins when they jump from barrier four with Melbourne Cup winning hoop Blake Shinn aboard.

The four-year-old has risen through the ranks this summer running a first-up fourth in a Benchmark 92 at Rosehill, finishing a close third to Tiger Tees in a BM 89 at Canterbury and then beating home a crack field in the Listed Canterbury Classic (11000m) last start on January 13.
