Winning Glory Targets Australia Day Cup 2012

David Payne is hopeful the weather will remain wet ahead of this week’s 2012 Listed Australia Day Cup at Warwick Farm.

The trainer will be lining up Winning Glory in the $100,000 race this Thursday January 26, 2012.

Winning Glory scored his last win in the Summer Super Saver Handicap at Canterbury on a slow-rated track and Payne is hopeful that the track will stay rain affected on Australia Day.

”It is supposed to rain for the next three or four days, which is good for him,” Payne said.

”He likes a bit of cut in the ground, so I’m hoping they are right for once.”

While the track is likely to suit, Payne realises it will be a tough task to win the 2012 Australia Day Cup.

”He likes the wet as well but is up in class,” he said.

”The same horses have been going around in these races for a while now, and it seems they are taking turns a bit; a soft track would help Winning Glory have his turn.”

Winning Glory’s most recent result was a seventh placing in the Listed Gosford Cup on January 12.

”We probably rode him a bit too close and used him up,” Payne said.

“I’m not sure if he handled the tight circuit, and he will be happier back at Warwick Farm.”

Winning Glory has won five of his 18 race starts and has earned close to $250,000 in prize money.

The One Cool Cat gelding will have to contest with the likes of Kontiki Park and King Lionheart in the 2012 Australia day Cup.
