Cavalry Rose has out-classed her more experienced rivals to win the $250,000 Inglis Classic at Rosehill last Saturday January 21, 2012.
The two-year-old filly won the race by a head in front of Diamond Earth and Taxmeifyoucan, who finished 6.5 lengths away in third.
Cavalry Rose overcame her race day confusion, despite showing obvious signs of being green.
Trainer Gerald Ryan was hoping the Charge Forward filly’s raw ability would shine through in the 2012 Inglis Classic after she won her only previous barrier trial by an impressive four lengths.
“I was nearly tempted to trial her again as she’s only had one trial and Glyn (Schofield) thought she might have needed another trial, but she’s only a two-year-old filly and you don’t want to be trialling them four days before their debut race,” Ryan said.
“She had only had two jump-outs and one barrier trial going into this race; she was the most uneducated horse in the field and halfway down the straight I was cursing myself for not giving her another trial.
“I didn’t think she was going to catch the leader because, from the top of the straight, she didn’t know what to do. She didn’t know how to accelerate or how to chase.
“Half-way down the straight I was cursing, but on the line I was happy, she knuckled down really good and she’ll learn more about it, she’s a nice filly.
“It’s nice to win one of these for Triple Crown, we’ve tried the win this race the last couple of years and have run placings, so it’s good to win one for them.”
Cavalry Rose will now go on an attempt to qualify for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper, which will take place on April 7, 2012.
However, the young filly will need to increase her prize money pool as last weekend’s earning will not count towards the Golden Slipper’s entry requirements because it was a restricted race.
