Black Caviar will make her return to racing in this Friday’s Group 2 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley on January 27, 2012.
The superstar five-year-old will be attempting to stretch her unbelievable winning streak to 17 unbeaten runs in the race.
The queen of racing’s pure presence is often enough to scare the majority of competitors away, however, she will face as many as 12 rivals in the 2012 Australia Stakes.
13 horses have nominated for the race, including last year’s VRC Oaks winner Mosheen.
Mosheen is not yet a confirmed runner, with trainer Robert Smerdon still choosing between the 2012 Australia Stakes and a three-year-old fillies race over 1,100 metres at Caulfield on February 4, 2012.
“She’s a chance to run in the Australia Stakes. We’ll gallop her and I’ll see what (jockey) Dan (Nikolic) has to say,” Smerdon said.
Mosheen has won three of her nine race starts and has earned more than $1.5 million in prize money.
Despite the expected small field for the 2012 Australia Stakes, Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said there was no chance the race would be cancelled.
“We would not delete a Group race,” Carpenter said.
“We would not get in a situation where every time Black Caviar runs in a Group 1 or 2 race and no one takes her on that we would call the race off.
“The race will definitely proceed.
“It is a Group race and people set their horses for these races, so we would not be deleting them.”
All eyes will be on Black Caviar as she makes her way towards a run in both the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes on February 11, 2012, and the Group 1 Futurity Stakes on February 25.
Doubtful Jack, Sound Journey and Stirling Grove are also included in the 2012 Australia Stakes nominations.
