Snippetsboy Surprise 2012 Inglis Classic Betting Favourite

News - Autumn Racing - Betting - Race Previews - Summer Racing
19 January 2012

Despite a dual winner being among their rivals, Gai Waterhouse’s unraced youngster Snippetsboy has opened at the top of the odds for this Saturday’s Inglis Classic 2012 at Rosehill.

Gai Waterhouse

Gai Waterhouse will look to continue her brilliant run with two-year-olds and win the Inglis Classic 2012 with Snippetsboy

The bookies are taking no chances on Waterhouse’s impressive crop of two-year-olds this season, with Snippetson gelding Snippetsboy paying a short $2.90 in the Luxbet markets for their debut run in the $250,000 Inglis Classic (1200m).

As Peter Snowden did last year with his ace Group 1 winning colts Helmet, Sepoy and Benfica, Waterhouse is enjoying a stranglehold on the 2012 two-year-old features.

Having run the quinella in the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast last Saturday with smart fillies Driefontein and No Looking Back, Waterhouse also prepares the current $4.40 Luxbet favourite to win the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield next month, Raceway.

On Saturday Snippetson, purchased for $60,000 from the 2011 Sydney Classic Yearling Sale, will look to have his name mentioned in the same sentence as his well-performing stablemates by beating a promising field of fellow Inglis graduates.

Drawn ideally in barrier three with two-time Magic Millions Classic winning jockey Tommy Berry engaged, Snippetson comes into the Inglis Classic on the back of two official trials.

Running second over 900m at a Canterbury hitout back in September, they showed good improvement on January 3 when winning over 858m at a Randwick trial.

Following Snippetson in the Inglis Classic 2012 odds at Luxbet is another debutant, Gerald Ryan’s Charge Forward filly Cavalry Rose at $3.40.

Cavalry Rose caught the eye of punters, and jockey Glyn Schofield, when she won a Rosehil trail over 900 metres on January 6 by a commanding four and a half lengths, and will be out to live up to the hype on Saturday with Schofield to ride her from her ideal rails draw.

Only one other Inglis Classic acceptor this year is at single-figures in the Luxbet markets with best-performing horse in the race, Diamond Earth paying a surprisingly generous $3.50.

Drawn wider in barrier nine with Peter Robl booked for the prized mount, the Anthony Cummings-trained Choisir filly Diamond Earth has raced three times to date winning the last two on the trot.

Both previous Inglis Classic winners came off a victory in the Inglis Nursery with Chance Bye (2010) and Pane In The Glass (2011).

Diamond Earth will look to continue this trend on Saturday having put three-quarters-of-a-length on spruik Waterhouse-trained De Shamekh in the Inglis Nursery (1000m) at her last start at Warwick Farm on December 17.

There are some queries from rival trainers, however, about how Diamond Earth will go stepping up to the 1200 metres.

Two other youngsters are under $20 in the markets and are considered the only other genuine chances in the Inglis Classic this year with David Payne’s Gosford winner Risky Blonde ($12) and Gregory Hickman’s Ad Valorem gelding Taxmeifyoucan ($13) debuting after a promising Warwick Farm trial this week.
