Spirit of Boom is the 2012 Magic Millions Cup winner

Toowoomba galloper Spirit Of Boom kept his perfect year going by winning the R M Williams $400,000 2012 Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

The Tony Gollan-trained entire produced a devastating finishing burst to take the 2012 Magic Millions Cup, his second big prize in 12 days.

The son of Sequalo and Temple Spirit won the Listed 2012 Goldmarket Quality (1300m) in similar fashion on January 2.

Gollan said the four-year-old’s recent improvement was due to dryer tracks.

“I had a lot of nervous moments in the run but when he got clear he put them away quickly,” Gollan said.

“We had him ridden off the pace in the winter but he hates rain affected tracks.”

Spirit Of Boom, $7 on Luxbet, settled on the fence with the back four horses in the 2012 Magic Millions Cup.

Startsmeup Luxbet $7, set fair speed in front with Sydney raider Mr Unforgettable Luxbet $21 on his outer.

The Luxbet $3.40 favourite Catapulted, a 1400m risk, was given no favours when caught three wide without cover in the 2012 Magic Millions Cup.

Latin News Luxbet $9, settled on his back and commenced a move at the home turn.

At that point, jockey Ric McMahon angled Spirit of Boom off the fence and between horses.

Startsmeup and Mr Unforgettable together ran to the front at the 200m but the latter just battled from that point.

Latin News and Sprit Of Boom moved to Startsmeup at the 100m but Latin News couldn’t  go on.

Spirit of Boom did and defeated the courageous Startsmeup who had to work for the initial 400m to lead.

The 2012 Magic Millions Cup victory was Spirit Of Boom’s sixth from 23 starts and took his earnings to more than $670,000.

“His last win was good but this was even better,” Gollan said.

“He will definitely be aimed for the Melbourne spring carnival but how he gets there I am not too sure.

“He will go for a break now but for how long?

“We will have to sit down and think about it.”
