This Friday night Canterbury’s popular twilight race program will be headlined by the 2012 Canterbury BMW Classic, the odds for which have now been released at bookies around Australia.
News Alert is narrow second favourite to win the 2012 Canterbury BMW Classic this Friday night
Due to jump at 9:00pm (NSW time) as Canterbury Race 5, the $100,000 Listed Canterbury BMW Classic (1100m) field features eight gallopers, an incredible six of which are under double-figures in the Luxbet markets.
It seems the bookies are having a hard time splitting the chances of the Canterbury Classic contenders this year, two horses currently battling for narrow favouritism.
Despite drifting out from $3.20 to $3.40 at Luxbet, rails-runner Stratford is clinging onto their position at the top of the Canterbury Classic 2012 odds for now.
The Stratum four-year-old resumes after a four month spell, the Hawkes-trained gelding last seen finishing less than a length away fourth to Tiger Tees over 1200 metres at Rosehill.
Lightly-raced with just seven career starts behind them, Stratford should get a gun run from their barrier one draw and with a flawless two-from-two record over the distance, they are the definite statistical pick.
At the other end of the scale is the $3.60 Luxbet second elect News Alert.
While Stratford has barrier one and is on the 54kg minimum, Joe Pride’s veteran Danehill Dancer seven-year-old News Alert has barrier six and is also the 60kg topweight.
There has still been plenty of support for them, however, after they enjoyed a form revival last-start beating home Rarefied in a photo finish in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) at Warwick Farm back on December 17.
The other Canterbury Classic hopefuls under $10 in the markets are then:
- #4 Phenomenal Lass ($6.50 Luxbet) – Joe Pride’s other runner, has perfect gate three draw and comes in fresh after a two and a half month break, is a stakes performer over the distance so has claims
- #6 Unanimously ($6.50 Luxbet) – Canberra raider comes off a close third at the track and distance beaten by two very good horses (Tiger Tees / Dystopia), has the form, draw and class to win
- #7 Mrs Onassis ($7.50 Luxbet) – Gerald Ryan’s nicely bred General Nediym mare has been in blistering form over her 11-start career winning five times, including her last two, beat a smart field by an easy three lengths over the Canterbury Classic track and distance two back and could do it again on Friday night
- #3 Jest Crewsin’ ($9 Luxbet) – Muswellbrook galloper was second to Rain Affair in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Warwick Farm last-start, has claims like all the rest, but feel there are better chances
Rounding out the 2012 Canterbury BMW Classic field and markets are then $13 chance Eight Bills (barrier two) who ran fourth in the Carrington last-start, and three-time Group 1 winning Queenslander Sniper’s Bullet at $26 through Luxbet.
